WASHINGTON - United States Joint Chiefs of Staff Joseph Dunford said the military option would be taken against North Korea if sanctions and diplomatic pressure had no impact on North Korea.
"The US military option prepared against North Korea will occur when diplomatic and economic sanctions fail," Dunford said during a working visit to South Korea, as quoted by Reuters on Monday (14/8).
Dunford's own statement comes as he meets South Korean President Moon Jae-in. The two met for 50 minutes to discuss current issues including North Korean provocations.
In addition to meeting Jae-in, Dunford is also scheduled to meet South Korean military officials, including Defense Minister Song Young-moo. After South Korea, Dunford is known to travel to China, as well as Japan.
Meanwhile, Jae-in previously stated there should be no more war on the Korean peninsula. He also asked the North to stop its threatening behavior.
"There can be no more war on the Korean Peninsula, whatever the ups and downs we face, the nuclear sitaution of North Korea should be resolved peacefully, I am sure the US will respond to the current situation calmly and responsibly in the same manner we are," Jae-in .
