Some Tips For New Users On Steemit

in #newusers8 years ago (edited)

If you're new to Steemit, It can be overwhelming on where to get started and how you can find success on here. There's more to this platform than just getting paid but here's some tips that could help.

Interact with the community

The obvious way to do that is create posts but when you vote and leave comments and reply on posts, that can help you gain some followers and allows others to see what you're about. It's putting yourself out there and having that communication that can help with finding that success on Steemit. You'll most likely end up having your posts shared and resteemed by others to not only show how great of a content you created, but also to show some support.

You want to build relationships with fellow Steemians because, well... that's part of what social media is all about.

A couple of places outside of the Steemit website you can interact is https://steemit.chat or one one of my personal favorite that you can find me in is Steemspeak on Discord chat (I would recommend downloading and installing the app). You can share your links to your posts to get more exposure on your content and have conversations with your favorite Steemians.

Use the many tools developed by fellow Steemians

We have some awesome developers on this platform that has built useful tools. You can check out http://steemtools.com to see a growing list of sites and tools to help you maximize your success on Steemit. A few I would recommend for new users would be:

https://steemd.com

Developed by @roadscape, you can see some information and the transactions that happen on the blockchain for a particular user. All you need to do is to add @ next to the username you want to look up in the address bar like so: https://steemd.com/@roadscape.

@roadscape is also a witness so feel free to give him a vote. If you are not familiar about what a witness is, you can check out this awesome post by @teamsteem that explains what they are and do for the platform https://steemit.com/witness/@teamsteem/what-are-steem-witnesses-and-why-you-should-support-them.

https://steemdb.com

This site is similar to steemd.com but has a bit more features like checking your vote power or data on your posts, followers, etc.

Developed by @jesta, also another witness you can vote for. He also has another similar site he developed you can check out that has a little different layout https://steemstats.com.

Again there's a long growing list of other tools for you to use if you check out http://steemtools.com.

Post Presentation

You can liven up your posts with learning markdown and html. You can do a simple google search and find the many sites that can teach you how to format your text and images on your posts. Here's a markdown cheatsheet I found:
https://github.com/adam-p/markdown-here/wiki/Markdown-Cheatsheet

Here's the example of the code to get the image formatted on the right and text on the left.

Code:

<div class="pull-right"><center><img src="http://www.emoji.co.uk/files/phantom-open-emojis/smileys-people-phantom/12299-thumbs-up-sign.png" /><br/><em><a href="http://www.emoji.co.uk/view/1338/">source</a></em></center></div>

Create original content

You better your chances for a more successful post if you create your own original content than just copying an article from a website or sharing other's content on your posts. Originality is what users tend to reward here on Steemit and with good reason.

Try to create your own images and type out your own text. A lot of times you may need to find an image online to better get your message across so citing your sources can help.

Use the proper tags

This is self-explanatory. If you use the wrong tags, it can make difficult to organize the content users go through on Steemit and could lead to a less weighted vote on your post.

Keep posting

Some find success faster than others but when you continue to post your content, you will eventually get recognized. It can take time to build a following and earn a reputation among the community.

Learn about crypto-currency

Since you are rewarded Steem and SBD, you want to cash in on those rewards but this can be confusing for those that are new to crypto-currency in general. Here's a post from @contentjunkie that shows how to transfer your tokens over to Bittrex exchange to turn it into bitcoins!
https://steemit.com/bittrex/@contentjunkie/how-to-transfer-steem-backed-dollars-to-your-bittrex-account-and-sell-them-on-the-open-market

To learn more on anything Steemit or crypto-currency, head over to https://steemit.chat or Steemspeak on Discord and someone will help guide you.

Thank you for your advice and sharing on how to create a successful path in steemit. I am a new and I am not really understand the cryptocurrency.I will spend on time on this new social media instead of facebook and twitter to get familiar with everything in steemit.

I have been here a week and am almost to 70 followers. I started from scratch completely. I am mainly sticking to the topics I know about and am sometimes commenting on new things I like to learn about. The community here is really good.

Seems to me that for every 3 or 4 comments I make I gain a follower. That is huge! On twitter it takes dozens of comments per day to gain 1 follower or 2, and you have to use hashtags and hundreds of people see it. Here like 5 to 10 people see it and you gain a follower. Much better ratio!

I hope everyone does well here, I realize my name is a little trolly, but everyone has been nice here and I am certainly doing my part to be nice and helpful too :)

I just started yesterday and already have 12 followers! It is indeed exciting. I'm ditching FB for sure. Love your avatar...so cute. I upvoted and followed you. You may do the same if you wish. Steemit on!

Steemit it is where it's at! :)

This all what we need. Here we not only focus on earning payment, but the great one is we could share everything what we have to the others. And yes, we could make a good relationship not only as a blogger but also a family. Thankyou so much @steemit and big thanks for this information @bitcoinparadise its really useful for me as a beginner in this great platform 🙏🙏

Thanks I appreciate the kind words. There's no better time to be apart of the Steemit family :)

U welcome, my friend ^^ @bitcoinparadise yeah, steemit made us mert new people and also family. Happy to be a part of @steemit family

Follow me @Yehey

Yea it takes time to get the hang of things but just keep Steemin and you get there.

Thanks! I'm a crypto-entusiast (ETH mostly) and a creative type, so I tend to be a bit scatter brained- I came here to steemit to share my photos with people, and have been a bit caught up by all the talk of how to earn money. I don't really think that's in the cards for me, and I'm a bit uncomfortable with some of the really blatant crap content, but I do really love the idea of the community.

I feel like your tips are pointers for a better overall experience, not just monetary-success wise. I've been trolling through newusers posts and it's been... enlightening.

Yea there is a lot of room for improvement in content on this platform and there's so many in it just for the money. Steemit is still in beta and will work through all the kinks eventually. That's why it's important to interact with the community to have a better overall experience.

makes sense! Thanks for the links to witness stuff as well, I kept seeing the term but wasn't sure what it was in reference to.

Awesome post! I gave you a follow.

Thanks, Right back at ya.

Thanks for reminding me to get onto steemit.chat ! interaction is key on a new platform :)

Awesome post! for the first time in my life I was starting to understand what my grandma felt about 15 years ago when she got her first computer. if I had been any more clueless everyone would have to start calling me Alicia 😣

Yea there is a lot to learn and can get confusing. Just keep at it and you'll get the hang of things.

Super helpful content for all the new users right now!

Helping new steemians is a great way to create good vallid content. Everybody who is posting such a post has his own view on how you can best start your journey here. Use those tips and pick the ones that have the best info for you. Keep these Posts coming I have learned a lot because of them!

Very true. There's always new users and it's good to have posts that can help guide them.

Thanks @bitcoinparadise!! Good info, will be using it for sure!!

Thank you. I followed :)

Really nice guide for all the minnows. Especially like the editing part. Will play around with it and learn from it. Thank you!

You're welcome @scrooger. I'm glad you are learning something new from this post :)

Yes, for some reason I never started editing with built in editor. I thought we had to use the HTML mode, so I googled everything from centering an image to drawing a line, still much to learn. Only yesterday I realized there is a built in editor. By now I'm so used to the HTML format that the editor seems dull. So any useful info about posting in HTML is greatly appreciated. Tried the editor once, didn't like it, HTML it is.

Yea the editor is more for making things simple for a non-coding user but learning Markdown and HTML can make things more interesting.

I agree, I tried the editor and as soon as I couldn't figure out how to center an image, I just flipped back to HTML. Might take longer but much more you can actually do. Your skills are awesome though, your posts look so clean and clear. I will have to learn a lot before I get to that level. Thanks for the nudge in the right direction! =)

This was a great post. Thank you.

Thank you and you're welcome.

Great advice. I am really new to this platform and I have been wondering how to give my first post good exposure. This post really helped

I appreciate the kind words and best of luck to you. You can always ask if you need more help.

Great, I noticed the cheat sheet was posted 12 days (from the time of this post) so it would be the most updated cheat sheet available. There are still many guides out there which are a outdated. I'm such as changes are made the cheat sheet will also need to be amended to follow the times.

Yes well you know how quickly the tech world moves but things will pick up and hopefully we can have a regularly updated guide for users.

This is my first week in steemit and feel happy to have found mentors like you. I shared my first post yesterday. Those who viewed it, they loved it. But problem is that not many people tend to view it at all. Do you think i am doing something wrong or may be things will get better in time. I am sharing my post for the reference
https://steemit.com/introduceyourself/@mindboggle/from-a-fighter-pilot-to-a-travelling-artist-my-introduction-and-some-unfulfilled-dreams

It takes time. I didn't even make as much as you on my first post. Just follow the tips and you'll do just fine. It was a great introduction post btw.

Awesome ! :)
Thanks for the Tips. Very Helpful.
New follower here :)

It was really Helpful..

I'm glad you thought so.

Thank you for working so hard to try and help us, we really appreciate the effort

Oh no problem. There are other's on this platform that is working wayyy harder than I am to help new users but I appreciate the kind words.

Great post👊 keep up the great work👍
Full Steem Ahead!

André
