Working with a growing firm in Nigeria is a very tough job. I have worked for many firms in Nigeria and they have almost the same kind of problem. I used to work with an agricultural firm as a farm manager in Oyo state.
What we do is to buy cattle at cheap price from the northern part of Nigeria and bring to Oyo state, we fatten it them at the farm for some months then they are transported to Lagos for slaughter and processing where customer are ready to buy the meat. My job as the farm manager is to keep the animals healthy and fatten them for some few months with my special feed formulation before they are taken to Lagos. The firm main office is in Lagos, the firm had other departments such as the crop, administrative and marketing department but I was only in charge of the animal department. the crop department was growing sesame while the animal department was to fatten cattle.
As the farm manager I was staying in a village close to the bush were the farm is located since is no accommodation for farm manager at the farm. I had concerns about the farm which I always reported but my bosses were not taking it serious, the farm did not have security, we were not getting enough medications for the animals and the animals were not eating as expected, we were always getting threats from neighbouring villagers and even from the village head but nothing was done about it. My bosses were not concerned as long as animals with good body weight are brought to Lagos for slaughter.
When the raining season came, our animals started falling sick and dying mysteriously, some would go grazing and not return, some will just fall and die without sign of sickness, I knew it was not medical concern but a veterinary doctor was invited but there was no difference.
One midnight, during the rain, some guys came to the farm with cutlass and guns, they tied up my workers and went away with 58 cattle, I got to the farm that morning and met them tied up. The job became very tiring from that day and I started reporting at the police station for report and questioning, some of my workers were sacked and I felt really bad for them because I believe they were good.
The rules changed at the farm and a security man was employed, I had less workers and the job became more stressful. I was no longer happy with the job, the crop farm also had almost the same problem, they did not have enough labour and crops were spoiling on the farm so the farm managers were now doing more than we could to keep the farm running and we kept falling sick because of so much stress so I decided to resign. My bosses bosses were not happy and then decided to change the story that me and the some of the workers invited people to come rob the farm because I have gotten enough money from them that is why I have decided to resign, they believe that because nobody sustained injury or died when the robbery occurred that means we planned it. They sent me several messages with the police asking me to come pay for the stolen animals, I ignored the messages but I decided from that period to work on my company and never to work for any Nigeria company anymore.
