Akshaya Patra conferred with Gandhi Peace Prize 2016

As a commemoration to 125th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, the Government of India instituted the Gandhi Peace Prize. This prestigious award is presented annually to individuals and institutions for their outstanding contributions towards social, economic and political transformation while adhering to the ideals of Mahatma Gandhi. On 26 February 2019, at a ceremony held in Rashtrapati Bhavan, New Delhi the prestigious Gandhi Peace Prize 2016 was conferred upon The Akshaya Patra Foundation along with Sulabh International, Ekal Abhiyan Trust, Vivekananda Kendra and Mr. Yohei Sasakawa. the Honourable President of India, Shri Ram Nath Kovind, and the Honourable Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi jointly presented the cash prize and a citation to Shri Madhu Pandit Dasa, Chairman – The Akshaya Patra Foundation. Akshaya Patra received this award for its contribution towards the socio-economic development of India by providing mid-day meals to millions of children across the country.

The jury for this award comprised of Honourable Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi; Chief Justice of India, Shri Ranjan Gogoi; Lok Sabha Speaker, Smt Sumitra Mahajan; Leader of the INC in Lok Sabha, Shri Mallikarjuna Kharge; and Member of Parliament, Shri LK Advani. The winning of the Gandhi Peace Prize put Akshaya Patra in the same platform as that of selfless individuals and organisations from across the world, such as Nelson Mandela, Desmond Tutu, Baba Amte, Chandi Prasad Bhatt for the Chipko Movement, ISRO, and Grameen Bank.
