Affordable Greenhouse farming in Nigeria (2)

in #nigeria7 years ago

As we continue on the second part of my greenhouse post the next step is:

Which Glazing to use?
Of the three given options, Glass glazing is the most expensive to setup. Plastic is the cheapest, mostly used and least durable. Plastic, also known as polyethylene must be UV stabilized. The best here is polycarbonate, it is cheaper to erect and can last much longer than Polythene (Plastic).

Construction demands
The land should typically be flat and level. A choice of wooden or galvanized steel frames should form the Skeleton. Galvanized steel is preferred because of its strength.
The soil should be tested and suited for the plants to flourish. Extractor fans can be installed to cool the plant during sunny days. There is another glazing material common in the northern part of the country; it is made with a net like material. It is popular because it allows the greenhouse to get ventilated through the pores of the net without the cost of powering for cooling.

What crops to plant?
Vegetables, herbs and flowers are the way to go in greenhouses. Vegetables, especially those that don’t do well in the raining season are common in this part of the country. Popular plants include:
• Tomatoes
• Cucumber
• Pees
• Leafy greens
• Peppers
• Coriander

Interesting. So these set of crops can grow without sun light? It is indeed a way to go.

No. The Glass in the house lets light in.
