GIANT OF AFRICA
Once alone without troubles
With esteem that transcends skies
Living in pieces but in peace
Heartily fetching the food of life
Not exposed,
Lived for today; cared for tomorrow
Unity, respect and love flourished
Like ewedu seeds amongst them
Harmony was the sound when one leader
Wielded the gong—
But situations are dynamic
Giant of Africa, you
Encountered a rude greeting
From a ship brought by a storm
And was confused by the truth
That your children were gods
Static locals invaded by the dynamist
Sold themselves for a shard of glass
Deserted tradition, left their gods
And thus did their gods leave them
But freedom was costly to new gods;
They lure the black skin to cheap labour
Subject it to defeat as object of mockery
Foreigners owned land-owners
And thus was the pride of blacks lost.
Giant of Africa,
Once coruscating
Now tittering in bondage
Your roots fettered in oblivion
Now, you have to pay for it—
But situations are dynamic
Static locals
Tossed back the shard of glass
To regain dignity, banned new gods
And so did the new gods depart from them
Like fleas off a baptised beast
Static locals are jumping around,
Bound in kinetic joy for freedom
For the gift of consciousness
Giant of Africa,
The spoils of your past
Besiege your present,
Ghosts of failure rise at every corner
And the honeycomb is dry
Still, situations are dynamic
Rise, let your children rise
And wipe away the agony of your tears
