Tales From My Grandmother (The Jealous Brother)

in #nigeria8 years ago

A long time ago, there was a man and a woman who had two sons. These boys had amazing dancing skills and in all the land, there was none better than these brothers. These made everyone love these two brothers and whenever there was a feast, they were usually called upon to dance for the entertainment of the people. Whenever there was a dancing competition, these brothers easily defeated other contestants and it made the people love them even more.

As we all know, no matter how good two people are at a certain thing, there will always be one has to be better than the other. Of these two brothers, the younger brother was the better dancer and people used to give him several other gifts other than the collective gift he and his brother got and the girls were always flocking around him. The younger brother did not become proud or selfish as a result of this, he shared everything he had equally between him and his brother.

After sometime, the elder brother started getting jealous of his younger brother. He believed that people should love him the more and that his younger brother should not be getting all the attention. He was even more bitter at the fact that the all the girls in the land, including the girl he liked gave him no attention and instead was always hanging around his younger brother, looking at him with immense adoration. However, the younger brother paid no attention to this girl as he knew that his elder brother liked her.

One day, these brothers were invited to provide the entertainment at a feast. They danced really well and the people were really delighted and showered them with gifts. One wealthy man who was present at the feast gave the elder brother five thousand, while another wealthy woman present gave the younger brother ten thousand. This infuriated the brother and he left the feast in annoyance.

On the journey back home, the elder brother could not hold himself anymore, therefore he turned o his younger brother and killed him, takook all his prize and threw his body in the bush. When he got back home, his parents requested for his younger brother and he replied that he stopped on the road, saying he wanted to greet some friends.

The mother had a craving for a certain species of Mushroom, so she went out in search of them. After walking for sometime, gathering the mushroom, she saw a particular mushroom and decided to pull it out. To her surprise, the mushroom started singing.
(I've heard this song in my native Yoruba language, so not writing it in Yoruba will be like denying my source. Don't worry, I'll translate it to English)
Iya mai tu.......... Ajantiele

Iya ma tu.......... Ajantiele

Aroko ijo.......... Ajantiele

A jo, a yọ.......... Ajantiele

Wọn fun ẹgbọn lẹgbẹrun.......... Ajantiele

Wọn fẹ emi lẹgbẹwa.......... Ajantiele

Oṣika ẹgbọn, Oṣika ẹgbọn paburo rẹ.......... Ajantiele

Translation

Mother don't pull it.......... Ajantiele

Mother, don't pull it.......... Ajantiele

We went to a feast.......... Ajantiele

We danced and made merry.......... Ajantiele

My brother was given five thousand.......... Ajantiele

I was given ten thousand.......... Ajantiele

Wicked brother, a wicked brother killed his younger one.......... Ajantiele

Upon hearing all these, the mother ran back home and called her husband and the same scenario replayed itself. In no time, the whole kingdom was present at the scene. The elder brother was tried and he confessed to his crimes. He was sentenced to death. And so ended the life of a wicked brother.
