Voice of the people; Democracy

The term democracy has its root from the ancient Greece, meaning the rule of the people by the people and for the people. It also means a government under the control of the citizens.

Democracy is characterized by periodic election and government by people elected by people. Democracy has room for free and fair election that harbors independence of the judiciary as it helps to settle political disputes.

It makes room for multi-party system that houses various parties and thus safe guarding the fundamental human rights of the citizens of the country. There is equal supremacy of the rule of law in a democratic system of government.

Nigeria, as a democratic state, practice those activities known for democracy such as periodic election, independence of the judiciary, rule of law, freedom of the free and fundamental human rights. Also in this present Nigeria, it is observed that these characteristics which qualify democracy are not dominant and effective in the system.

Frankly speaking, the elections which are meant to be free and fair are now being jeopardized by the electorate commission and equally by individuals who participate in he election. Ballot papers are miscounted which some are violated. Bribes are being given to the independent Electoral commission in order to sponsor a candidate in their favor in which they believe will rule to the anticipation. The INEC which are supposed to be independent is now being rubbed of that feature.

The fundamental human rights of the citizens which are an imperative feature of democratic states is no longer recognized. Citizens are molested and deprived of their human rights. People are being murdered without a judicious reason as such acts are not brought to justice.

Fair hearing is not given to individuals before trials and imprisonment. The system of democracy has being reduced to an infinitesimal level that has made the country in total befuddlement.
We need to wake up Nigeria, this is who we are and there is no way we change this country without changing ourselves positivity. all hands should be on deck

In conclusion, Nigerian democracy as at now is no longer something to write home about as it is now made a game. The electoral commission should put more efforts in the free and fair election and the deprivation of the fundamental human rights should be checked periodically to ensure healthy democracy in Nigeria. I love my country and will do everything humanly possible to make it a better place. We can
