Nokia has just taken the wraps off its first Android flagship smartphone at an event in London. Dubbed Nokia 8, the phone comes with a premium all-metal design, top of the line specifications, a Carl Zeiss powered dual camera setup at the rear, 100 per cent stock Android and more.
The Nokia 8 will retail for 599 Euros and aims to compete with the likes of the Samsung Galaxy S8, iPhone 7 and Google Pixel. There are a lot of expectations riding on Nokia's return to the high-end segment of the market. Let us examine the Nokia 8 in detail:
Sturdy all-metal design:
The Nokia 8 is constructed entirely out of metal and carries forward the design language seen on the Nokia 3, 5 and 6. The smartphone looks modern yet pleasantly reminiscent of Lumia smartphones of old. The Nokia 8 is machined out of a single block of aluminium and is just 4.6mm thin at the edge.
The rear is dominated by the vertical dual camera setup below which sits the Nokia branding. On the front, there is a physical home button flanked by capacitive keys for back and recent applications. There is also a fingerprint sensor embedded into the home button
Nokia 8 cameras:
The Nokia 8 comes with dual 13-megapixel f/2.0 RGB and monochrome sensors at the back, and while that setup has been seen on several other phones, HMD is betting big on (the unfortunately named) "bothies" - the ability to capture images and videos from front and rear cameras at the same time.
Nokia has had a long and storied history when it comes to smartphone photography. Along with Carl Zeiss, the company has given us iconic camera phones such as the Nokia N95 - the first phone in the world to come with a 5MP rear camera and the Nokia 808 PureView - which came with a 41MP rear camera.
Nokia 8 carries forward the legendary Nokia - ZEISS partnership. The Nokia 8 comes with a ZEISS powered dual camera setup at the rear - a primary 13MP RGB (color) sensor with optical image stabilisation paired with a 13MP secondary monochrome (black and white) sensor. Both cameras have an aperture of f/2.0 and the setup comes with phase detection auto-focus and a dual-tone flash. The rear camera(s) can also record video in 4K resolution.
