πŸ’© Your UPVOTE Ain't Worth SHIT πŸ’©

Post / Comments that earn 0.001 to 0.019 SBD worth of rewards
are rounded down to 0.00.

As some of you are aware there was a suggestion brought up that is currently on the trending page to set a minimum payment on our comments / post to $1.00. If you are unaware of this proposal you can read all about it here or visit my previous topic on the issue called Minnows Are In Trouble ( Yes That Mean's You) but did you know the current ( 2018/04/20 ) min payout is set at 0.02 ?

If not you are not alone. Other's I have talked to and myself included had no clue. While it's hyperbole for me to say " Your Upvote Ain't Worth Shit " this is still important information to take into consideration as a blog writer or for anyone that uses the Steemit platform.

For example :

If you are a blog writer who likes to reward anyone who took the time to read and comment on your blog with an upvote worth 0.01 then not only did your 0.01 reward to your follower go un-paid but you also just diminished your voting power for no good reason. As every vote you cast decreases your voting power. Your diminished power will replenish itself after a set amount of time has passed.

What can we do if our max upvote isn't worth $ 0.02 yet ( like mine ) but we still want to show appreciation to those that took the time to visit and comment on our blogs ? My suggestion would be to visit that person's blog / profile and upvote their most recent blog / article instead of the comment they left for you. As it's most likely one of their active blogs already has a few upvotes on it. This gives your upvote the max chance of rewarding the person you intended to. This same strategy can also be used when you read an author's past post that are over 7 days old. An upvote on a 7 day or older post pays 0 rewards to the author. What you can do instead is visit and upvote a more recent blog / article the author has created.

All that being said, if a comment already has upvotes then upvoting that comment yourself will contribute to pushing said comment past the 0.02 threshold. In which case the author will be rewarded if the total value of all upvotes combined reach 0.02 or above.

I knew that anything over 7 days is a wasted vote. I thought it was always like that. But a minimum on posts & comments seems unnecessarily draconian to the small fries of steemit.

What is the point? The only reason I can see to implement such a policy is to put a "tax" on those who can't regularly draw 2 cent votes. Which, as you pointed out is pretty uncommon. Thus this is just a means of preventing the spread of steem to minnows.

A visual analogue of what we would expect to be the reward stream to be is a flow of sand piling on a table spreading out to the community. The outer 25% being curative rewards. These guys are placing a ring around the flow so the reward pool cannot spread out as far.

The min payment should be removed or dropped to 1 cent. It's hard enough for any new members to succeed on this platform.

Our wallets goto the 0.001 ... so I feel they should round to 0.001 and distribute payouts rounded to the nearest 0.001 instead of 0.01.

I think part of the reason that they round to the nearest 0.01 is to lessen the dust transactions which could be argued to bloat the block-chain.

The rounding is to the nearest 0.02.

I agree with you about no minimum but I think allot more will be ok with a 0.01 min then a 0.02. As 0.01 represents a full cent and the smallest fiat dollar value which everyone is accustomed to.

I think a shift to moving the "dust" threshold up to $1 won't reduce spammy posts, it will just drive more volume through bid bots

It will drive some from the platform and will drive some others to do as you said, use bots to get to $1.00

Thanks @royaleagle - your upvote here illustrates the point perfectly. My @ginabot notification tells me the upvote is worth 0.017 which is just below the "dust" threshold, yet if I were to self-vote (or someone else votes) and adds another small amount then it will likely be enough to hold the value and pay me out.

I stopped by and dropped a vote to bring you above 0.03. Apparently us plankton will have to stick together and make sure that content that has 0.02 or less in votes is bumped above the threshold.

Awesome. Thankyou.

I think I like the idea of no minimum payout vs a mandatory minimum or rounding down.. Thanks for the info, was't aware of this..!

No problem, I was unaware of the threshold myself and wanted to inform others.

It's not technically true. I think the rounding occurs after the totalling of all the votes. So, if at the time writing, you have 46 0 cent votes, which all the dust added together gives you a 13 cent payout.

My mistake, I think you are talking about comments, which don't attract alot of votes...

Β 7 years agoΒ (edited)Β

If a comment has 0 votes on it and my vote is worth less then 0.02 then the value of my upvote rounds to 0.00. Which is what my article is trying to inform others of.

That being said ... If a comment already has a few upvotes then upvoting said comment will allow a persons upvote to contribute to pushing the value to or over the 0.02 threshold. I better go edit my article to include that as to not cause any confusion.

Yes, sorry, I edited my comment probably just while you writing yours! I realised I had misunderstood!

Great info @rentmoney, thanks! I had no idea about the .02 minimum. That's very helpful to know.

I have been thinking about and putting together a blog about how to reward those authors whose blogs we find helpful even when their posts are over 7 days old. If you don't mind, I'm going to incorporate your excellent idea into my blog (or if you do mind, please let me know)

Upvoted and Resteemed. Cheers!

Currently the best way to reward an author for a blog over 7 days old is to leave a comment on the post and if the author replies upvote the comment which will be rewarded after 7 days :)
The other way is to just send them a wallet transfer of either steem or sbd as a thank you for the information.
In the future they are planning on allowing posts to have "co-authors" for reward payout so a future possibility could be you writing a post about how good the info is in said blog and tagging the Original Poster as a co-author so they would split the rewards from your post.

All good Idea's !

Ha! That is amazing, @royaleagle, because, other than the wallet transfer, those were both pretty much exactly the ideas I was going to propose in my post. I guess great minds think alike, eh? πŸ˜‰ It also seems that you've saved me from having to write the post, so thanks! 😎

Cheers mate!

You should still write a post. Posts get more exposure then comments and it's always a good reminder.

That's true. I will! Thank you for the reminder too.

Great -- I look forward to reading that blog !

@rentmoney, just read @royaleagle's comment. 😁

Hah, that doesn't matter to me even if my upvote is dust it still shows appreciation to other people's work. I just can't upvote anymore because my VP got too low from all the upvotes I like to give away.

My upvote isn't worth much either and for the most part I stick to up-voting topics instead of comments.

Cool.
