Wonder why Am I spamming Under your comments?

in #none7 years ago (edited)

I'm trying to test different methods people are using to grow in steemit and one of the more frequent methods I've seen is starting to beg for follows and upvotes under other peoples posts.
It is very annoying for both sides and specially sounds like a torture on the spammer side but since I've seen it many times, it should yield some result otherwise they would stop after few days.
Now I'm planning to go around and throw the same kind of comments at people to collect some data and calculate and publish the result...
for science...

if you came to see this post through one of those comments please leave a comment and let me know what you think.

First phase is done:

I commented a meaningful comment on 50 posts with additional begging signature under each comment:

took around 4 hours (minus 15 minutes for eating a piece of cake),

stats in this past few hours are:

  • two visits and comments (thank you)
  • one visit and upvote
  • one confirmed visit to my blog page (not visiting the post)

More than a day past and it seems the total attraction through the 50 comments is 9 possibly 10 people.

Second phase is done:

After waiting a day I commented a meaningful comment on 50 post without any begging. took around 4 hours, we will wait a day or so to see what happens.

More than a day past and the interaction was minimal, visit and comment or upvote on this post from those whom I've left a comment for. and the post views where less.
It seems that asking people to visit our blog actually works, to test it future I'm going to copy/paste the same comment for everyone in the next phase of the test. apologies in advance.

Third phase is done:

It took me around 40 minutes to copy paste the came comment under 50 posts and record the names.

now let's wait another two days and see if that works any better than the previous method.

the results are in: Despite yesterdays attack, spam + begging directed more attention to this post than the first two method. I got flagged once for spamming but my overall reputation have grown. this shows not enough of people flag the spam comments to create any concern for the spammers.

Conclusion

The sample size was small but it seems that not asking for visit didn't direct any real attention to this post and sadly between a "meaningful comment + begging" and a "spam + begging" the winner was the spam.
Next time you wonder why people spam the answer is: Because spam works.
My suggestion: Flag every spam you come across and when people leave a meaningful comment under your posts check their account and give them some love back.

Well, I personally hate spamming but can't help it.. Maybe that's the only way to attract whales

true, but I have to do this, to fight it, we need to understand it fully.

I personally check blogs when people leave this kind of comments but it does not say that I WILL follow or upvote. That takes some quality content too. But I must say that i like it better if people "just" comment and no begging.

I do the same, however I had to do this test, sorry for the inconvenience and thank you for the comment.

I dont really do much. I comment on topics that interest me, put some articles or content i find interesting kinda erratic. I dont really have much time on my hands right now. Soon im going serious with some niche content but right now i cant.

I use a much different method. I call it quality content. Doesn't matter if it's a comment or a post or whatever.. it's all original. Whatever comes off the top of my head. I also UV other people's comments. Especially one that's making fun of someone for leaving a generic bullshit comment ... let me know how it works out for you tho

sure, ^_^

Interesting. Never Thought About Any Of This.

I added the results and the conclusion, hope it answers some of the questions you didn't ask yourself yet. ^_^

Are there punishments for too many comments, lost steem etc one nice thing is if people have to be judicious with their interaction :)

a spam comment can be down voted that will effect the accounts reputation, a low reputation means the posts (and maybe the comments) will be hidden and the account fails to get any exposure.
also the amount of the down vote will be cut from the post and comments reward pool.

thank you ^_^

Interesting experiment. Seems the "It never hurts to ask" principle has some relevance or at least influence on comments and upvotes but would not seem to outweigh the strength of the content itself at least.

Well it never hurts to ask. The I follow you will you follow me is over used by folks just looking to set up a resteem service. I did that originally but found many of these folks were restreemers or worse folks who copied and pasted stolen work and identities. That being said I always check out someone's page before following. I like your experiment, I like your content, you get an upvote and a follow.

True, I don't think there is any real value to "The I follow you will you follow me" either, the sweet spot of up-voting is around 11 to 20 votes each day, their resteems just end up getting lost in the busy feed and won't get any votes,
unfortunately this experiment shows spamming works better than real feedback under peoples post as a mean to direct attention to ones own posts.

There must be a happy medium but I guess that is what your experiment is about.

Hi, unnun! I just resteemed your post!
I can also re-steem and upvote some of your other posts

Curious? Check out @resteembot's' introduction post
PS: If your reputation is lower than 30 re-blogging with @resteembot only costs 0.001 SBD

well this will mess with my result...
I wanted to keep attention from this post as much as possible, that's why I didn't tag it either.
ummm... I should stop talking to a bot.
