Oh, it's worse than you think. Back in the 80's I saw a windowcase display where researchers had given several dozen college students felt cutouts of all the continents and a piece of string to represent the equator. The students were asked to arrange them to represent the earth. The end results were on display. Only two or three of the students came even close to an accurate map.
All of the students were geography majors.
