North Korea threatens to cancel US summit

Just when peace seemed like a real possibility, Kim Jong-un has threatened to pull out of the scheduled NK/US summit planned for June 12th. The blame lies primarily with Trump's National Security Advisor John Bolton. The North was angered when Bolton mentioned in a TV interview the US was looking at a 'Libya' model for disarming the country, which was seen in 2003 when the US agreed to lift sanctions on Libya in exchange for it giving up nuclear weapons. The deal seemed sweet at first, but Libya's leader Gaddafi was eventually overthrown by a NATO-led operation.

North Korea hasn't forgotten this and may suspect the US wants to weaken the country through disarmament before replacing its leadership by military force.

An official statement from the DPRK said: "High-ranking officials of the White House and the Department of State including Bolton, White House national security adviser, are letting loose the assertions of so-called Libya mode of nuclear abandonment. This is not an expression of intention to address the issue through dialogue. It is essentially a manifestation of awfully sinister move to impose on our dignified state the destiny of Libya or Iraq."

The flip-flopping from the North caused Asian indices to finish lower, though oddly South Korea's KOSPI index was the best performer, up 0.05%.
