The wood island - A New urban discovery
As the spring is over we finally completed our project! Its about 8 months since students from Oslo, Trondheim and Bergen teamed up to create the first ideas. The result after 2 weeks of construction labour is an island of wood. And it was all done by architect students from all around Norway!
The project consists of a long floating path, the island and a transparent roof. The floating path connects the island to the land and the transparent roof makes different spaces to be in on the island. Some people have asked us "why have you made a transparent roof in Bergen?" A question which is very understandable if you realise how much it actually rains in Bergen! The answer to that question comes with the wind. The wester wind is really strong which would make it impossible to make a roof of our size. The roof can been blown away and probably take parts of the floor with it! But still the roof separates the island in different spaces. Giving the place areas for being private and public.
As you can see on the picture above, two girls are sitting on the outside of the transparent wall, meanwhile a bigger group have occupied the inside of the construction.
And in the end a proud moment for me as the construction is finish on a rainy August.
A space where shadows dance and people can meet for a silent bonfire at the end of the day. Probably also one of the more popular swimming location of the summer of 2018?
