This was weird, but fun. I enjoyed the book and its ridiculousness for the most part. When it turned heavily into religious talk is when I tuned out. That really wasn’t my cup of tea, I was okay with it until it was still vaguely about nature. When it crossed that line into religion it turned into a disappointing ending, I was hoping for something different. I did like the suits based on days of the week tho! The writing style is another thing that I enjoyed a lot.
I felt whilst reading this that the themes of not being able to trust what you know, and having fights with yourself that are manifested into very real threats was a pretty good metaphor for how life is for a lot of people. I do think people at times can be trapped within themselves, whether that's indecision or demons or generally trying to figure things out. I know at some point in this Syme was willing to sacrifice himself for others and then having this end on the note of God/Jesus felt a little bit like a full circle moment. I do think it did teach him a little bit of a lesson and demonstrated that suffering is just a part of life and that he is unable to take on those sins for other people. It was an interesting end but I always worry with books like this that my interpretation is completely off. I do think it brought up some interesting themes, but it felt like the characters were just a vehicle for those themes and philosophical thoughts rather than entities in their own right.
It was not at all like what I expected and it was actually really funny to me at times. I thought it was especially hilarious that there were so many spies. I also loved the way the characters were fleshed out and how many of the disguises were so well done (although impractical like with Worms ) and felt natural in the story. The whole Anarchy part of it was a surprise for me as I didn't really read the blurb beforehand but just went with vibes, but I think that was the perfect backdrop to tell this story.
