Reading the novelization of Deep Throat at the moment. So far it seems like the author tried to push the envelope on exploitation and shock jockying so far that it borders on the surreal. Not to excuse or glorify the problematic nature if its entire existence, but my initial reaction was I found it laugh out loud funny, full of corny puns, and witty moments. The description of sex acts themselves are really unique and entertaining. However, there are plenty of racial stereotypes, breaches of consent, sexual abuse, homophobic slurs and sentiment, pedophilia…the list goes on. In a historical context it’s interesting as well. They mention psychiatrists and physicians (no, not just Freud) that I ended up learning a bit of human sexuality theory in the process of researching them while reading it. Overall Deep Throat the novel is often jaw droppingly terrible, simultaneously transgressive and dismissively moving on to the next ludicrous moment without missing a beat. Made me laugh out loud at times, but definitely not for the faint of heart.
