Ancient mask

Today I share a watercolor that is part of a series I had painted some time ago.

The series was dedicated to the masks, African, Aboriginal and of Nordic mythology.

This watercolor is my invention, based on some of my old experiences in Africa.
I tried to represent memories of a ritual of Benin linked to the Earth, with little vivid colors.

Ocher and brown, to remember the wood and the soil, the gray for the stone.

I painted wooden supports that hold the mask, with its mouth open to represent a cave.

The mask is a symbol, among the oldest of man, it is a sort of means to communicate with the beyond or the divine, through rituality, a dance, a song, a sacrifice.

In the next post I will deal with the connections and characteristics of the use of the mask.

A use of the mask that still today has remained unchanged in many cultures, and that we often use to give a different image to others.

Antica maschera

Oggi condivido un acquarello che è parte di una serie che avevo dipinto qualche tempo fa.

La serie era dedicata alle maschere, africane, aborigene e della mitologia nordica.

Questo acquarello è una mia invenzione, basata su alcune mie vecchie esperienze in Africa.
Ho cercato di rappresentare dei ricordi di un rito del Benin legato alla Terra, con colori poco vivaci.

Ocre e marroni, per ricordare il legno e il terreno, il grigio per la pietra.

Ho dipinto dei sostegni in legno che reggono la maschera, con la sua bocca aperta a rappresentare una caverna.

La maschera è un simbolo, tra i più antichi dell'uomo, è una sorta di tramite per comunicare con l'aldilà o il divino, attraverso la ritualità, una danza, un canto, un sacrificio.

Affronterò nel prossimo post i collegamenti e le caratteristiche dell'uso della maschera.

Un uso della maschera che ancora oggi è rimasto invariato in molte culture, e che spesso noi usiamo per dare una immagine diversa agli altri.

Un abbraccio mascherato.

What an interesting piece, Armando ! I love how you break down the facial's planes and then rebuild them as the mask's areas <3 So wonderful, you captured the mysticism and simplicity of a mask's expression and purpose ! I really like this :)
