Tips on finding the right apartment in New York City

I recently moved to New York City about 4 moths ago from New Orleans and I learned some things about making the move to the city. First, plan ahead and do not wait to save and do research about neighborhoods, cost, work commute etc. If you can or have visited prior to the move that is the best way to get your bearings. Coming from New Orleans where the cost of living was much more reasonable this took a lot of pre planning and research to make the transition as smooth as possible. Second, be realistic about what you can afford. NYC is know for being one of the most expensive cities in the world for a reason. Apartment fees were something I thought I could get around.. I didn't. Its almost impossible to find a decent place that does not have a rental fee associated to it. I recommend http://streeteasy.com for apartment searching, it allows you to modify your search for apartments with/without fees, by neighborhood, price range and amount of rooms. Its very informative as well, most posting have information about where the nearest train station is. Moreover, that added cost for renting an apartment can be a real obstacle if not planned for. For example, ($1900 + $1900) first and last and an additional ($1900) fee. Whereas most cities around the country only require first and last. Lastly, don't settle for the first apartment you view. my girlfriend and I were slightly rushed in making our decision on the place we have now. Given the circumstances its not the worse thing in the world. We are near the train, have rent under 2K and have a modern, up to date apartment. The downside is my commute takes way longer than I expected and can sometimes take me 2 hours to et home from work. Had we done a little more research I could have avoided this year long contract with the subway. In the end, NYC has been amazing these past few months, I love this place more and more everyday. I hope this post helps someone on their way up here.
