On the racism of The New York Times.

Does that look right to you? "Black" is capitalized, but "brown" is not. Why is that again?

"The Times also looked at whether to capitalize white and brown in reference to race, but both will remain lowercase. Brown has generally been used to describe a wide range of cultures, Mr. Baquet and Mr. Corbett said in their memo to staff. As a result, its meaning can be unclear to readers; white doesn’t represent a shared culture and history in the way Black does, and also has long been capitalized by hate groups."

The reasons offered by Messrs. Baquet and Corbett don't hold up to scrutiny. NYT won't capitalize "white" because it "has long been capitalized by hate groups." Say what? WE won't capitalize it because THEY do? And NYT won't capitalize "Brown" because it has "generally been used to describe a wide range of cultures." Yet doesn't the term "Black," which could refer to people living all across the continent of Africa, or in Europe, the Americas, and elsewhere around the world, also "describe a a wide range of cultures"?

I don't care if both the New York Times and the Associated Press Stylebook have decreed that "Black" gets capitalized but "Brown" doesn't. It's wrong. Just as it would be wrong to capitalize "Christian" but not "jew" or "muslim."

I look forward to the day when people will no longer be discriminated against because of the color of their skin. And I look forward to the day when neither "black," nor "brown," nor "white," nor any other word used to designated the colors of the human race will receive preferential treatment.

Either capitalize all of them or capitalize none of them.

Sort:

NY Times has gone to shit in my opinion. I used to read it all the time now every time I read it everything is just so full of obvious bias.

The NYT has always been a propaganda rag. This piece talks about how Walter Duranty (1884 – 1957) was an apologist for Stalin.

The NYT has a long history of coaxing America into foreign excursions. They they blast the US when the going gets tough.

I used to read the NYT back in the 1970s and 80s. Its political bent was apparent back then.

People talk about how it was a great rag that went bad. I think it has always been a fountain of propaganda. People wake up to the dishonest nature of the paper at different times. I started reading the rag in the 1970s and could no longer bide by the dishonest journalism in the mid 1980s.

I've been thinking that the paper changed but maybe I just changed and woke up to what was always there.

I've actually had this experience with many journals and podcasts. I love the first 40 or so episodes. I feel that the creators are being straight forward and that the journal is a beacon of truth.

Then one day I notice that the articles seem to be repeating narratives and fail to fully address the facts and realize that the journal was simply employing a formula designed to fool the readers.

In some cases the journal is open about its biases. These I don't mind. The NYT bugged me because the manipulation seems to be at a deeper level. Even worse, the manipulation seems to be more damaging than openly biased media.
