Today marks the 5th anniversary of the creation of my Steem account. Even though HIVE did not exist back then, it somehow also my Hive anniversary. To say that a lot has changed since then, might be an understatement, since the blockchain forked away from its original version after Justin Sun bought Steem. Five years might not be such a long time, but in crypto it's a small eternity.
It is a great opportunity for my to take a look back and reflect a bit, what changed in the last five years. So, listen to this 15 year old song about 5-year intervals and follow me on a trip down nostalgia lane (btw. I tend to be a very nostalgic person, so I'm all up for this)
I created my Steem account on 22.11.2017, account creation was done via Steemit.com and @steem delegated 25 Steem Power to me, so I can actually use the blockchain. The delegation was only temporary, and I had to earn or buy enough Steem, if I wanted to continue using the blockchain. Luckily I managed.
Even though my account was created on the 22., it took my a full week, before I wrote my introduction post. Looking on the block explorer, what I did in my early days, I found out, that the first person I followed on Steem was @howo, who is still very active here on Hive 😃
I actively started following crypto earlier that year, back in June 2017 when ICOs were all the rage. This is also reflected in me second post, which was about some shady dealings of HydroMiner, an ICO from an Austrian company promising "Green Crypto Mining" and selling the tokens as vouchers for cloud mining next to small hydropower plants in Austria. The ICO was a success, but like many ICOs from 2017, that didn't turn into something sustainable. The company did indeed fade into obscurity, and neither their website nor their Facebook page exists any more.
When writing that post, I thought that it's going to be a hit, since people on Steem are very interested in Crypto things, ICOs were quite popular, and I had some "exclusive pictures of their office, or lack thereof" (to make it short: they listed a co-working space as their office address, I used to live nearby, but the co-working space did not show any signs of them being actually there, such as having their company name on the door). Well, it wasn't a big hit and I only got 4 upvotes 😅
This did not discourage me from continuing to blog on Steem and by being consistent with blogging, I even managed to get some upvotes from whales. Big thanks to @steemstem, for upvoting my posts back then, that helped me really out a lot. I'm thinking of posting stuff related to my research again, however I'm usually busy with doing stuff for said research, to write and post something about it.
Back then I was very motivated, and it is kind of difficult to explain now, but back then this felt like the future of social media and there were just so many cool things posted on chain. After the ICO bubble bursted in early 2018, we were entering a long bear market, and it did affect the activity on chain. Don't get me wrong, there were still a lot of people posting great content here in 2018 (@roundbeargames comes to mind), but the quantity and IMHO general interest went down.
The bear market was long and brutal, which you could feel in different ways. Obviously, by the decline in crypto prices, but also in other ways, like once promising projects shutting down or also fading into obscurity. One example for that is @steepshot, a very promising on-chain Instagram.
Despite all of that, I kept blogging all through 2018 and continued to do so in 2019, albeit posting less frequently then. Early 2020 was a fateful period (for pretty much everything) but I'm referring to Hive forking from Steem. I decided to fork away as well, since staying on a chain controlled by Justin Sun was never an option. Also most of the community went there. In hindsight, it's easy to say, that Hive won against Steem, but back in 2020 Steem had a higher market cap than Hive for quite a long time.
On a side note: between January 2018 and around February 2020 crypto was bleeding out slowly, then for a very short time very rapidly (just like anything else, when Corona hit). But even though the price was down, I never sensed the same kind of desperation that we have now after the FTX debacle.
Anyhow, at one point the bear market was over and, I guess from early 2021 on, the price of Hive recovered as well. I have to admit, that I wasn't very active on Hive back then, so it's a bit difficult for me to compare the vibe of this bull run to the one from 2017. Maybe, having already experienced one bull run, I wasn't as receptive to the hype and seeing Hive as the future of social media compared to 2017. Also, our collective perception of social media in general changed quite a bit since then and is in general much more negative, IMHO.
Starting in February of this year, I did get a second wind on Hive. And it all started with me joining #hivemeetupvienna organized by @manncpt and meeting the awesome people there. It's really cool to have a local Hive community 😃 I'm also looking forward to the next Hive meet-up in Graz, organized by @reiseamateur and meeting the Styrian Hive community.
Looking back, it was a fun experience, and I'm curious how Hive will look like in 5 years time.

Es ist eine großartige Gelegenheit für mich, zurückzublicken und ein wenig darüber nachzudenken, was sich in den letzten fünf Jahren verändert hat. Also, hör dir diesen 15 Jahre alten Song über 5-Jahres-Intervalle an und folge mir auf dieser nostalgischen Reise in die jüngere Vergangenheit.
Ich habe mein Steem-Konto am 22.11.2017 erstellt, die Kontoerstellung erfolgte über Steemit.com und @steem hat mir 25 Steem Power delegiert, damit ich die Blockchain auch nutzen kann. Die Delegation war nur temporär, und ich musste genug Steem verdienen oder kaufen, wenn ich die Blockchain weiter nutzen wollte. Zum Glück habe ich es geschafft.

Als ich mir den [Block-Explorer] (https://hiveblocks.com/) ansah, was ich in meinen frühen Tagen tat, fand ich heraus, dass die erste Person, der ich auf Steem folgte, @howo war, der hier auf Hive immer noch sehr aktiv ist 😃
Ich habe im selben Jahr angefangen Krypto aktiver zu Verfolgen, damals im Juni 2017, als sich alles um ICOs drehte. Dies spiegelt sich auch in meinem zweiten Post wider, in dem es um einige nicht ganz so saubere Geschäftspraktiven von HydroMiner ging. Es handelt sich dabei um den ICO eines österreichischen Unternehmens, welche versprach „Green Crypto Mining“ zu betreiben. Die verkauften Token sind Gutscheine für Cloud Mining neben kleinen Wasserkraftwerken in Österreich. Der ICO war durchaus erfolgreich, doch wie so viele ICOs aus 2017, wurde nicht wirklich mehr daraus. Das Unternehmen ist in der Versenkung verschwunded, und weder seine Website noch seine Facebook-Seite existieren mehr.
Als ich diesen Beitrag schrieb, dachte ich, dass er ein Hit werden würde, da die Leute auf Steem sehr an Krypto-Dingen interessiert sind, ICOs sehr beliebt waren und ich einige „exklusive Bilder von ihrem Büro bzw. ihren nicht vorhandenen Büro“ hatte (um es zu machen kurz: Sie haben als Büroadresse einen Co-Working Space angegeben, ich habe damals in der Nähe gewohnt, aber der Co-Working Space wies keine Anzeichen dafür auf, dass sie tatsächlich dort waren, wie z. B. der Firmenname an der Tür). Nun, es war kein großer Erfolg und ich habe nur 4 Upvotes bekommen 😅
Das hat mich nicht davon abgehalten, weiterhin auf Steem zu bloggen, und durch konsequentes Bloggen habe ich es sogar geschafft, einige Upvotes zu bekommen [von Whales] (https://peakd.com/steemstem/@cpufronz/adventures-in-cognitive-science-7-language-simulations-and-their-role-in-cognition). Ein großes Dankeschön an @steemstem für das Upvoting meiner Posts damals, das hat mir wirklich sehr geholfen. Ich denke darüber nach, wieder Sachen zu posten, die mit meiner Forschung zu tun haben, aber ich bin normalerweise damit beschäftigt, Sachen für diese Forschung zu tun, etwas darüber zu schreiben und zu posten.
Damals war ich sehr motiviert und es ist jetzt schwer zu erklären, aber damals fühlte sich das wie die Zukunft von Social Media an und es wurden einfach so viele coole Dinge auf der Chain gepostet. Nachdem die ICO-Blase Anfang 2018 geplatzt war, traten wir in einen langen Bärenmarkt ein, der sich auf die Aktivitäten auf der Chain auswirkte. Versteht mich nicht falsch, 2018 haben hier noch viele Leute großartige Inhalte gepostet (@roundbeargames kommt mir in den Sinn), aber die Menge an Posts und das allgemeine Interesse gingen meiner Meinung nach zurück.
Der Bärenmarkt war lang und brutal, was man auf unterschiedliche Weise spüren konnte. Offensichtlich durch den Rückgang der Kryptopreise, aber auch auf andere Weise, wie einst vielversprechende Projekte, die eingestellt werden oder auch in Vergessenheit geraten. Ein Beispiel dafür ist @steepshot, ein sehr vielversprechendes On-Chain-Instagram.
Trotz alledem habe ich das ganze Jahr 2018 über gebloggt und auch 2019 weiter gebloggt, obwohl ich damals weniger häufig gepostet habe. Anfang 2020 war eine schicksalhafte Zeit (für so ziemlich alles), aber ich meine, dass Hive von Steem abgespalten hat. Ich entschied mich auch für einen Fork da es für mich nie in Frage kam, auf einer von Justin Sun kontrollierten Chain zu bleiben. Auch ein Großteil der restlichen Community ging dorthin. Im Nachhinein ist leicht zu sagen, dass Hive gegen Steem gewonnen hat, aber im Jahr 2020 hatte Steem lange Zeit eine höhere Marktkapitalisierung als Hive.
So, nebenbei bemerkt: Zwischen Januar 2018 und etwa Februar 2020 blutete Krypto langsam aus, dann für eine sehr kurze Zeit sehr schnell (wie alles andere, als Corona global ging). Obwohl die Preise im Keller waren, habe ich nie die gleiche Verzweiflung gespürt, die wir jetzt nach dem FTX-Debakel haben.
Irgendwann war der Bärenmarkt jedenfalls vorbei und ich schätze, ab Anfang 2021 erholte sich auch der Preis von Hive wieder. Ich muss zugeben, dass ich zu dieser Zeit bei Hive nicht sehr aktiv war, daher fällt es mir etwas schwer, die Stimmung dieses Bullenmarkts 2021 mit der von 2017 zu vergleichen. Da ich schon einen Bullenmarkt erlebt, war ich nicht mehr so empfänglich für den Hype und Prognosen über die Zukunft von Social Media. Außerdem hat sich unsere kollektive Wahrnehmung von Social Media im Allgemeinen seitdem ziemlich verändert und wir sehen es meiner Meinung nach viel negativer als noch 2017.
Ab Februar dieses Jahres erlebte ich einen zweiten Frühlung auf Hive. Alles begann damit, dass ich am #hivemeetupvienna teilnahm, welcher von @manncpt organisiert wurde, und dort tollen Leute traf. Es ist wirklich cool, eine lokale Hive-Community zu haben 😃 Ich freue mich auch schon auf das nächste Hive-Treffen in Graz, organisiert von @reiseamateur und dass ich die steirischen Hive-Community treffe.
Rückblickend war es eine lustige Erfahrung, und ich bin gespannt, wie Hive in 5 Years Time aussehen wird.

Yeah, I also think that we need more content and more active users here on Hive. There is a lot of potential, but it is not fully used yet.
i also think hbd with high apr has a lot of potential. it needs to be battle tested but with content and "somewhat" stable currency it could really be something.
Agree, it has potential, but it needs some more battle testing. After the Terra (LUNA) fiasco a lot of people are rightfully sceptical when it comes to stablecoins with a high APR.
