One of the nicest parts of Rotherham is Wentworth, a beautiful old worldly village, with two churches.
Wentworth has some history, especially with the big house there (see previous posts), as it's had prime ministers and all sorts live there.
Today, however things are different, the house has finally been opened to the public, as at one time it was only the very elite that got to see inside. It's no longer owned by any family, I think the National Trust has taken over ownership, but the beautiful village benefited from the house and the legacy of the family's that lived there are still a prominent feature of the village to this day.
There's a beautiful road down to the new church (even though it's old), it was the old way to the church that the family in the big house took to church. I was a little early today, but when the daffodils come out, it really does look beautiful.
Now when I say new Church, this is still an old one, commissioned back in 1872 by the 6th Earl Fitzwilliam, he had it built in memory of his parents and also dedicated to the Holy Trinity, as was the old church. The new church cost around £25,000 to build, although I don't know what this would be in todays money.
It is a beautiful building inside and out, and the gothic type nature makes it feel much older than it actually is.

So just down from the new Church is the remains of the original Holy Trinity Church, which you can still go inside part of it, sadly, it was closed on my visit today, so no pics of inside for now.
The original church is believed to have medieval origins, mouldings have been found to date back to the 13th century. The church fell to rack and ruin after the new church was built, so part of the church is just a wall, as you can see, but I am so glad that it hasn't been knocked down, I do like this old church, but when I have been inside, it was great to see it, but nothing like the splendour of the new church.
If you are ever in the Rotherham area, I would really advise you visiting Wentworth, it has a fantastic garden centre (although expensive!), as well as great food in the two pubs that are in the village, it's only a small village with big character, with some wonderful walks too.
Thanks ever so much for reading my blog, I didn't have my camera on me, so all shots was done using my iPhone XR using the Camera2+ app.
