CHAPTER 5
My Aunty could not hide her shame. She was pregnant for the defendant of slaves but what could a lady in love do? It was a question I never could answer then at my age. It was a big embarrassment for our family and my father had to bear the humiliation by hiding her till she gives birth. My father never liked this idea but she could not refuse my grandmother request.
My mother is a good woman, she loved all her in-laws including Aunty, she welcomed her in, encouraged her to have a shower while she made a good meal for her. Aunty could not eat anything but my mother tried pacifying her while my father could not hide his disappointment in her.
“She has brought shame to our family, why do you have to pamper her.” My father said angrily.
Aunty could no longer hold the bitterness in her heart as she cried loud and I felt my father was bullying my Aunty.
“You don’t have to talk like this, she has made a mistake and she has learnt, you don’t have to make it difficult for her.” My mother replied
“Look, she is stupid and that is final.” My father said angrily and he left the food on the table and walked away.
“My in-law, I am woman and I understand the pain and agony of been in love with the wrong person. You have done the unspeakable but you would not die over a mistake the heart made. You would fight this and we will fight this shame together. My mother said.
My Aunty stop crying as she rushed to hug my mother, I was wondering why my father was angry that Aunty is pregnant and he his happy while his friends wives are pregnant. I could not ask the question because my mum said when elderly ones are talking children keep quite and observe .
“You would be staying in the same room with Pedo till this whole drama will be over.” My mum told her. My mum asked me to look after my Aunty and make sure she is always fine that my responsibility is to make I attend to all her needs. I really had sympathy for my Aunty because I did not like what my dad said to her. I was so glad to welcome her in my room.
