September is lobster season in Hawaii

in #ocean6 years ago

Every year September 1st marks opening day of lobster season in #hawaii. The season lasts till April, easy way to remember the open season is if a month has the letter "R" in it. So that means months May to August they are closed.

State Rules that divers have to follow when getting these bad boys are...

  1. All lobsters have to be MALE

  2. They have to be over 4 inches from the back of the eyes to the base of the head.

  3. You have to catch them by hand ( no traps, no spearing, no nets)

So this all makes it more of a score for the ones that can get them.

My son has been diving since he was 8 years old. He is now among some of the best divers on the island at only 20 years old now. He is waiting for news to see if he is the new record holder for his kumu ( the red fish) the current record is 6.4 pounds and we think this one is a good 7 pounds.😮🤞My son sent me this picture the other day and it just made my mouth water🤤. We use to eat lobster almost everyday when I lived back on #maui.

Well without further ado here is his catch 🌺

So if you are a lobster, you would want to be female for sure. Lobster is delicious, its incredible that you get to eat it nearly everyday in Hawaii, what a treat. Your son got an awesome catch, is it free diving or scuba diving that he does? Do you know what kind of fish that is in the photo?

The fish is called a kumu not sure what other name it would be called. Yes its free to fish and dive the waters just need to know each fish law etc. My son is a free diver.

sorry for the lame question, but how do you distinguish between male and female lobsters? 🤔

When you flip them over the little flaps that cover the belly. The males are way smaller and the females ones almost cross over the bottom on their tail ( they hold the eggs)
