Trump Family Has Held Deal Talks With Binance

Representatives of President Trump’s family have held talks to take a financial stake in the U.S. arm of crypto exchange Binance, a move that would put Trump in business with the firm that pleaded guilty in 2023 to violating anti-money-laundering requirements.
At the same time, Binance’s billionaire founder, Changpeng Zhao—who served four months in prison after pleading guilty to a related charge—has been pushing for the Trump administration to grant him a pardon… Zhao, widely known as CZ, remains Binance’s largest shareholder.

“So reading between the lines, the Trump family gets to buy into Binance if CZ gets a pardon.” — Taegan Goddard

Coronavirus, Medicine, and Public Health:

Trump takes advantage of our collective COVID amnesia

US tariffs on India will be a bitter pill to swallow

Nearly half of all medicines taken in the US come from India alone. Generic drugs - which are cheaper versions of brand-name medications - imported from countries like India make up nine out of 10 prescriptions in the US.

Politics:

Mahmoud Khalil’s Detention Is a Trial Run

The pro-Palestine student was arrested without due process for exercising his right to free speech. He will not be the last.

Judge Orders Elon Musk to Turn Over Documents

A federal judge has ordered that Elon Musk and his Department of Government Efficiency turn over a wide array of records and answer questions about plans it crafted to downsize federal agencies, fire employees and suspend federal contracts.
U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan’s order Wednesday is a win for a group of 14 Democratic state attorneys general who are suing President Donald Trump, Musk and DOGE, arguing that Musk has unconstitutionally wielded immense power in ways that are damaging their states. Any information the states glean as a result of Chutkan’s decision will help her determine whether to block Musk and DOGE’s government activities altogether.

“What prepares men for totalitarian domination in the non-totalitarian world is the fact that loneliness, once a borderline experience usually suffered in certain marginal social conditions like old age, has become an everyday experience of the evergrowing masses of our century.” — Hannah Arendt

White House Pulls Nominee for CDC Director

The White House is withdrawing its nominee to run the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in an abrupt move just hours before his confirmation hearing was scheduled to begin.
Trump officials were expected to inform the Senate Thursday morning that Dave Weldon, a former Florida congressman, will no longer be its pick for the agency.
Weldon had faced growing scrutiny over his anti-vaccine views, including an extensive record during his time in Congress of raising questions about the safety of vaccines and their potential links to autism.

Don’t Trust the Trumpsplainers

The past few weeks have felt like a Cold War thriller in which an enemy agent somehow infiltrates the top of the United States government. Soldiers fighting for democracy have been abandoned to die in the field. The U.S. president vows to annex Canada, Greenland, and the Panama Canal. Long-established alliances are suddenly teetering. Economic bungling has pushed the country toward recession. The only beneficiaries of this bizarre series of MAGA outrages have been America’s geopolitical enemies.
Those of us who have reported for any length of time on the pro-Trump movement are called upon again and again to explain what is happening and why. We attend conferences, join television programs, and meet foreign reporters. And when we do, we find ourselves confronted with what I call the opioid dispenser.
The opioid dispenser might be a politician, a business leader, or an academic. Whatever their basis of authority, the opioid dispenser offers a message of reassurance.

Republicans Unsettled by Pentagon Spokesperson

Kingsley Wilson’s appointment as deputy press secretary for the Pentagon has caused consternation among pro-Israel Republicans on Capitol Hill given her long record espousing antisemitic conspiracy theories.

The Whiplash Presidency

If the defining feeling of the start of the first Trump administration was chaos, its equivalent in this term is whiplash. The president and his aides have been changing their minds and positions at nauseating speed…
Trump isn’t just going back on specifics. Some of his core campaign propositions are also looking shaky. Despite campaigning on the deleterious effects of inflation, he now says that it’s not a top priority. He promised booming wealth for Americans; now he can’t rule out a recession and is warning that people will need to endure some pain (for what higher purpose, he hasn’t made clear). And even though Trump has long said that he won’t cut Medicare or Social Security, Musk is now targeting them and calling Social Security a Ponzi scheme.
This kind of vacillation creates an obvious credibility problem for the president and his administration.

Behold The Golden Age Of Public Corruption In America

Senate Democrats Embrace Hardball on Shutdown

Senate Democrats left a private meeting Wednesday saying there aren’t enough votes to advance the short-term funding bill that passed the House on Tuesday.
This raises the chances of a government shutdown this weekend. Democrats are in the unusual position of being willing to risk a shutdown to negotiate a better deal with Republicans.

I’ll believe it when I see it. Since January 20th, Congressional Democrats have not shown a whole lot of evidence that would indicate that they have spines.

Steve Bannon Won’t Rule Out Running for President

In what weird, twisted alternate reality would a toad like Bannon end up as POTUS?

ICE Returns All Migrants From Guantánamo

The Trump administration has abruptly cleared out a second group of migrants it brought to the American military base at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, returning to the United States 40 men it had flown there in the past few weeks.
The move comes days before a Federal District Court judge in Washington is set to hear a major challenge to aspects of the policy.
It is the second time the administration has brought people to Guantánamo Bay only to remove them after a few weeks, a costly and time-consuming exercise.
