Tariff Uncertainty Will Keep Rising, Paralyzing Businesses

The Trump administration’s tariff campaign is generating huge uncertainty for businesses that was already becoming a drag on the economy. It will only further intensify in the weeks and months ahead.
Until recently, stock-market investors seemed to be acting on the assumption that most of Trump’s threatened tariffs simply wouldn’t happen, perhaps believing they represented mere negotiation tactics. They have now been disabused of that notion.
The prospect of disruptive tariffs has already held back many businesses from decisions such as new hiring or embarking on major purchases or investments.

Trump Takes the Dumbest Tariff Plunge

We’ve courted Mr. Trump’s ire by calling the Mexico and Canada levies the “dumbest” in history, and we may have understated the point. Mr. Trump is whacking friends, not adversaries. His taxes will hit every cross-border transaction, and the North American vehicle market is so interconnected that some cars cross a border as many as eight times as they’re assembled…
Mr. Trump is volatile, and who knows how long he’ll keep the tariffs in place. Retaliation that hits certain states and businesses may also cause him to reconsider sooner than he imagines. Investors are trying to read this uncertainty as they also watch growing evidence of a slowing U.S. economy. Unbridled Tariff Man was always going to be a big economic risk in a second term, and here we are.

The Signal for Democrats

Frontline Democrats are frightened by so many things, but there is only one source of blow back threatening to boil over now, and it’s from these constituents, who understand clearly what is happening to their country and are desperate to stop it.
People who show up to congressional town hall events may not be exceptionally well schooled in the fine points of parliamentary procedure, but they know anger and bravery and commitment to principle when they see it, and they want Democrats to demonstrate those emotions and character traits now, even if they aren’t hardwired to any process that might directly undermine Trump’s efforts.

U.S. Mint Removes Coin Honoring Capitol Police Officers

The U.S. Mint has removed from its website the gold medals honoring police officers who protected the U.S. Capitol during the Jan. 6, 2021, riot — another instance of President Donald Trump’s administration moving to take down material related to the violent episode stemming from his falsehoods about the 2020 presidential election results.

Falsehoods is such a weasel word given that lies is available.

100 minutes of Trump

Well, he didn’t hold back. The 45th and 47th president gave us the full Donald Trump experience last night with a raucous joint address to Congress which lauded his culture war victories, denigrated his political opponents (including Joe Biden by name more than a dozen times), attacked seething Democrats for refusing to stand and applaud him and generally felt more like a MAGA campaign rally than a traditional presidential speech.

Europe and our country need to stop wasting time being astonished by each micro blow. They have to get a grip on the macro picture. A new world order, by design.
