I'm happy you have found that you can do this. In the area of the country that I live Walmart and others take the out of date items and "bad fruit and veggies" and take them right to the dumpster or some of it goes to "Harvesters" an organization that collects food for food pantries through out the area ! There used to be day old bread stores that used to sell really old bread and pastries for pretty cheep and the hog farmers would come in and gobble all that stuff up to slop the hogs with!
