Every SEO strategy aims to rank as high as possible on search engine pages. To do this, all marketers try to design and develop websites that are favored by Google's algorithms.
Factors in Google's algorithm can be divided into two categories that will determine the ranking of your site: on-page and off-page. Here, I will invite you to get to know the basics of on-page SEO, as well as discuss various techniques and how to apply them.
What is On-Page SEO?
On-page SEO is the practice of optimizing web pages for higher rankings as well as getting more relevant traffic on search engines. On-page SEO refers to the content and HTML source code of a page that can be optimized. It is the opposite of off-page SEO which refers to links and other external signals.
On-page SEO has to do with existing elements on your own website. On-page SEO includes technical settings, the quality of your code, the quality of your textual and visual content, and the ease of use of your website.
After you understand the meaning of on-page SEO, then it's good for you to know the various ways needed to implement an on-page SEO strategy.
Page Title Optimization
Page title optimization is an attempt to add and optimize meta title tags on website pages to make them more attractive to readers and search engines. A title tag is assigned to the page by adding a line of HTML code: Title Tag Example .
A heading tag (identified as an 'H1' line of HTML code) is a title that appears at the top of a web page. In WordPress, a heading tag is added to the title section of a new post or page.
The title tag (identified as the 'title' line of HTML code) can be different or the same as the title tag on the page, and does not appear on the content page. Instead, these tags are displayed elsewhere which serve to describe the content to search engines as well as provide readers with a preview of the content.
Meta Description
The meta description is an HTML attribute that provides a brief summary of the web page. Search engines like Google often display meta descriptions in search results, which can affect click-through rates.
The meta description is an HTML tag, which looks like this in the HTML code for the page:
The goal is simple: someone needs to search on Google to click on your link. In other words, meta descriptions exist to generate click-throughs from search engines.
Search engines say there's no direct ranking benefit from meta descriptions—they don't use them in their ranking algorithms. However, there's an indirect benefit: Google uses click-through rate (CTR) as a way to tell if you're getting good results.
If more people click on your result, Google considers you a good result and will, based on your position, increase your ranking. This is why optimizing the meta description is so important, as is optimizing your title.
H1 Tag Optimization
Each page or post can have multiple titles. The HTML
tag is typically used in the title of a page or post, and it is the first visible header on a page. The h1 formatting is usually different from the other header tags that can be found on the next page (h2, h3, h4). To create this text, the H1 tag is usually formatted differently than the other page tags.See the example below.
The H1 tag used is On-Page SEO and when viewed in HTML it looks like this:
On-Page SEO
An easier way to understand using the H1 tag is to imagine that you are writing an outline of a document or other piece of writing. The main heading of your document will be your < H 1 >, your main heading < H 2 >, and the subheadings < H 3 >.
One of the most complicated tasks of a search engine is understanding the meaning (context) of a page. To be able to do this in the most effective and efficient way, they use data from different signals. One such signal is the page title and the H1 Tag.
When crawling a piece of content on a web page, the search engine spiders will read the HTML code and they will try to identify which sentences are included in the heading tags (h1, h2, etc.). They take this as an indication of content.
So, by using keywords in the H1 tag, you can help search engines to understand more about your site's pages. Another reason why headings are important for SEO is because they make it easier for users to navigate the page.
