Runeberg wrote many classics including the national anthem. I'd say that while Runeberg was an important poet, I have some reservations as to the content of some of his work. While I can very much appreciate Finnish nation building mainly because of the alternative to that project, I find nationalism somewhat dubious, particularly in light of what happened in the following century. Also, the way Runeberg praises glorious death is whitewashing the extreme violence, utter horror and waste of life that war is. Defensive wars are sometimes completely necessary, though. I'd say, however, the destructive potential of war has become so great that pacifism is supremely justified in our age.
