Steemit Open Mic week 74 (ORIGINAL) - Funny story, funky didge, lapsteel slide, 1-man band - Lucky Man Story - naTHAN Kaye

in #openmic7 years ago (edited)

ORIGINAL SONG - Hilarious story about an Aussie in San Fran, funky didge beatbox, lapsteel slide, 1-man band - Lucky Man Story - naTHAN Kaye - (Steemit Open Mic week 74).

AN UNCONVENTIONAL AUSSIE IN THE USA - TRUE STORY:

I wrote this after a mega 2 month tour of UK and Ireland where I ended up in the USA on a crazy road trip to Burning Man Festival via Las Vegas and the Nevada Desert!

THE BACK STORY PRE-AMBLE:

I've always been a storyteller.
That's why I became a film & TV actor and also why I became a musician.
Music is a form of storytelling, even when there are no lyrics.
But the depth of storytelling got elevated another notch when I was in Ireland.

You see, before I got to the States, I had finished playing at a festival in the South East of Ireland and after the fest had ended and everyone left, there was about 40 of us huddled around a huge fire sharing songs and stories.

The Irish have this incredible tradition of story songs.
That is, songs that start out more like an incredible actor's monologue, but then they literally break into chorus (all together) at key moments, returning back to the story, then back to the chorus... (seriously an incredible cultural tradition that I could rave on for hours about)

This was revelationary to me!

I then heard a few trad bluesman play in the USA who also had a similar style of storytelling songs. (mind blown!)
So as I was experiencing my journeys through the USA, I wrote this song of this hilarious experience I had and I employed this incredible story-song type format that is traditional in Irish culture and African-American blues culture.

Now, due to a comment, I feel I must say this:

I don’t play a whole bunch of instruments to intimidate anyone. On the contrary, I hope to inspire everyone here to want to play music and excel at their passion.

I’ve never been signed to a label, nor any hard hitting agencies or managers.
I’ve been doing my whole music career completely DIY independent style.
I have always done it all by myself.

Self-management. Self-promotion. Self-tour management. Self-roadie. Etc.
It’s been really hard work.
Every stage I’ve ever played on anywhere in the world I’ve been the one that works my butt off to research it, book it, plan it, promote it, drive to it, lug my gear to it, perform it, pack it up and on and on.

If you’re new to music, I’m the kind of artist that should make you feel empowered because I’ve had NO HELP and managed to carve out some semblance of career sharing my original music.

Every time I’ve booked a support act whenever I’m the headline act, I’ve always tried to find artists that are better than I am (at least in some way) so that I am forced to do better than I have ever before at each show.

Raise the bar.
Get more creative.
Get more dedicated.
Get more focused.
Get more passionate.

Ok, so Even though it's a bit different to the normal song entry, I really do hope you enjoy and perhaps get transported into viscerally experiencing what transpires in the story!!!
AND IT IS ALL TRUE!

As with my previous performances, nothing is looped or pre-recorded in this one-man band performance. I am simultaneously playing the
"Violap" Lapsteel Slide guitar (co-designed by Ben Harper),
Slide-Didge (modern adaptation of the traditional Aboriginal wind instrument known most commonly as didgeridoo),
vocals and
electronic foot drums (homemade from wet-suit, plywood, guitar cables, and contact mics into a drum module).

Massive thanks to @luzcypher @krystle @soundlegion @passion-ground @verbal-d @pfunk & @meno for taking all that massive amount of time to judge & support musicians around planet Earth to shine here on this awesome platform.

So dear friend reading this, I do hope you enjoy this performance!

Thanks so much for listening.

I'll be back. I hope. Seriously, you kick ass.

Haha! 😂 woohoo!
Best, funniest compliment comment thus far!

I'm aliiiiiive! Yeah! So, back to my fangirly stuff. It's amazing that you sit there and play so many instruments at once WHILE telling a story. I mean that takes skill. You're so entertaining to watch. I'm sure your shows when you tour are off the charts brilliant.

I can't wait to see your future videos. I mean it! Thanks for the awesomeness! -serena : )

I’ll check out the promo mentor server.
Thanks for the heads up.

Mate, you have an extraordinarily keen ability to tell a story and keep the groove going without missing neither a beat of the story nor a beat of the song. That is incredible, my friend! I loved this!

I loved that you opened your comment with ‘mate,’ mate! You’re becoming an honorary Aussie!
Yeeeeeeew!!
I’m super stoked that you enjoyed the storytelling song vibe!
And I love it when a fellow musician noticed intricacies in the performance like you did, @passion-ground. For me, that makes the compliment hold even more weight.
Thanks so much, mate! I’m honoured you enjoyed it!
🙏🏽⭐️🎼🎶🌟💫

On the one hand knowing about world elite artists like you comin to steemit openmic I myself can just aswell pack up and leave...but on the other hand...man how great is that!!! Blows me off and it is so cool to see that steemit gets known to such great guys like you! Extraordinary!

Thank you so much, bro!
But no, no, no! Don’t pack up and leave! Just be inspired to get even more creative and dedicated.
And I’m in no way a world elite artist, although I appreciate the compliment.
I’ve never been signed to a label, nor any hard hitting agencies or managers.

I’ve been doing my whole music career completely DIY independent. I have always done it all by myself.

Anyway, blessings and gratitude to you @senzenfrenz for stopping by, listening and dropping me a line. I really appreciate it.

Best encouraging response from a fellow original artist, keep it up brooooo

Thanks for acknowledging that, bro! We must inspire and encourage if we wish to positively change the world...

Thank you @marivi1989! What a blessing!
🙏🏽🎼⭐️🤟🏽

awww man I REALLY enjoyed this! You have talent for sure and that story made me laugh!!!!

Thanks so much @evecab!
I’m so stoked that you enjoyed it and had a laugh! Yay! Laughter heals.
🙏🏽⭐️🎼🤟🏽

will follow for more ;) BTW I just saw that yo are vegan AND a martial artist!!!! Just my kind of person ahahah. I just noticed you are already on our vegan Discord group that's awesome! Which martial art do you practice? I practice BJJ..

Boom! Woohoo!
I’m a black belt in karate, but I’ve trained in many martial art firms over the years. Currently training in Hapkido and loving it!
Been meaning to try BJJ for a long time.

Forst became vegan when I was 10 years old. Before the term vegan was a thing.

wow that's amazing!!! Age 10? Taking my hat off to you.
Try BJJJ I'm sure you'll get hooked ;)

Yeah. You’re probably right.
But I’m so hooked on Hapkido. I just love the feeling (and art) of doing fancy kicks (which the Korean martial arts perfected) and pressure point locks.
That being said, my master has studied BJJ and teaches us floor/ground work which is sooooooo much fun! So yeah, I’m likely to love BJJ too.

Another awesome job man \m/

Cheers bro! Thanks for checking out another of my sharings, @lk666!

Wow lol man... you are a trip!! Hell yeah. Great talent, dude.

Happy to trip you out @gjones15! Hehe.
Thanks for checking it out and for your kind compliments!
🙏🏽⭐️🎶🤟🏽🤘🏽

Wahoo! Lucky man! I have a brother with your formerly ex problem. He gets overlooked most times when they go out and about. Hehehe. I'm gonna recommend that he grows his hair out and step it up a bit. Anywho....great job!

Haha! Woohoo! He’s a lucky man! Hehe.
Tell him long curls gets the girls! Bwahahahah!
Anyway, Thanks mate! Happy you enjoyed it!
Cheers @andrewdaines!
🙏🏽🎶🤟🏽👍🏽⭐️

Man, you put up the best productions of OpenMic! And again, that lapsteel sound... awesome!

Wowsers @pedromrmourato! Thanks so much, bro! 🙏🏽
Yeah, that particular lapsteel is just one of those magical instruments you come across rarely! I feel so honoured to have been journeying with her for the past 12 years or so. We’ve been through a lot together in that time. And you should hear her through my analogue rig! Just even more of a spectacular tone!
Blessings mate
🙏🏽⭐️🎼🎶🌟👍🏽🤘🏽🤟🏽

Hi @nathankaye, Landed here via @steevc's post. We've Steemit and music in common so I thought it's good to connect with you. I'm your 180th follower. Would like to know you more through your posts.

By the way, I covered a Bollywood song from an old movie. Originally, it was sung by male and female singers but I tried to cover the both versions. I also shared the link for original track in my post. It would be great if you could take a look at it in your spare time.

Have a great weekend ahead.
