Is it essential to use a phone? People are doing some fancier videos that may involve microphones and other types of cameras. I don't mind that as it's about the performance. Just wondering if it should be opened up a bit

No, it doesn't have to be a phone but it does have to be live and say "Open Mic Week 38" at the beginning to qualify for rewards. The phone is just to make easy for anyone to enter.
