In just the last three years there has been at least a 30 percent spike in organic growing, in terms of the amount of acres in the state of Iowa alone that are dedicated to growing organic crops.
Right now they have more than 700 certified organic farms that are growing everything from hay and oats, to corn, soybeans, apples, berries, and more.
Last year, it was just over 133k acres that they had for farms that were growing organic crops. This region produces more organic soybeans and corn than any other region, as well as organic oats. It is estimated that some 30 percent of the overall organic oat supply is coming from just this region alone.
Doing Better By Going Organic
Since farmers are able to sell those organic products at a higher price, they are able to earn more by working less land, tending to a smaller farm. They are often able to get at least 2x as much as they can get when they grow non-organic soybeans or corn. With more farmers who might be struggling and looking to seek more profit to survive, this has meant that more are looking into organic farming, which often brings better prices.
U.S. sales for organic fruits, vegetables, milk and meat, grew at least 31 percent last year to just under $10 billion, according to the USDA.
Organic farmers are going to be seeing plenty of business for years to come, so long as they are providing high quality goods that people value.
