How to Tackle That Sore Spot in Your Home

in #organizing7 years ago

Do any of you have that drawer or cabinet that drives you crazy to open and look at?

Have you wanted to do something about it and tried multiple times but couldn't figure anything out?

Do you think "If only I had one more drawer to divide this up, it would solve the whole issue"?

I am here to tell you there is a way and you don't need another drawer to take care of it! Yay!
I am also here to tell you that another drawer won't solve the issue! That will only make your mind think that now you have more space to fill with MORE stuff...

Do you have a drawer that looks this?
This drawer has been driving me absolutely nuts since we moved in a year and a half ago! I have not done anything with it because there was just too much stuff and not enough room!

I know all of us have things that make us cringe every time we see it. I also know for the most part we can still choose to ignore it for some time. But, at some point we will get to the point of NO MORE! FED UP!
I have been going through my whole house over this past year and just simplifying by making the "tough" decisions to LET GO!
This drawer finally made it to top of my list and I got to the point of it has GOT....TO...GO!
So as I said before, I have been SIMPLIFYING! So I pulled everything out, laid it all out on the counter and began making decisions.
I went through all the thinking of "what if I need it for something?", "I have used it before", "I know I already have one, and never use this spatula but what if I am making something and need another?". HAHA
Do you have these thoughts when finally trying to simplify and these thoughts slow you down and even hold you back from making the progress you so desire??
Me too! It's natural!
The good news is that you can control your thoughts and actions if you so choose!
I was so stinking tired of this drawer and not being able to close it without moving things around that I was able to fight those urges to hold on and keep the things I truly use!

How can you take care of your sore spot? Glad you asked!!!!
-Take EVERYTHING out and lay it out before you.
-Pick each item up and decide QUICKLY to keep or let go. (Control your urges to hold on)
-Put the Keep in a pile and the Go in a separate pile.
-Take the Go pile and put it in the trash or your car to run to your local donation place.
-Take the Keep pile and observe how much is left. Is there still too much? Go through again and see if there is any more things to let go.
-Once everything is finalized, begin putting things back where everything is easy to access when needed.
(Hint: If things still have to be shoved in places, then either too much is left or maybe some things need to be put in the areas of the home where they are actually used(a whole other blog on that topic).)

This picture shows all the things I decided to part with and allow someone else who could use them, have them!
After all who needs like 15 chip bag clips??? Thats craziness!
This drawer is now so exciting to go into and get something. To be completely honest, I sometimes open it just to see it and go AHHHHHH!!!!
Call me crazy! Just wait until you organize that eye sore of yours! You are so proud, excited, and relieved! You will do the same thing!

So now I give you the result! TaDa!!!!

Everything is now easy to see, grab and put back! I only have what I will use and was able to move some spatulas to a better location. And it only took me about 10-15 minutes to go through, put back and hang up!

So that's my story with this sore spot! I hope it makes you want to tackle yours and also inspire you to make those decisions to LET GO and find new, creative ways to use space that might not seem like useable space!

And I think Nike says it best...JUST DO IT!
Or as we say it...MAKE IT HAPPEN!
