The College of Computer Studies (CCS) conducting all FRESHMEN and TRANSFEREES Orientation Seminar in collaboration with the Philippine Society for Information Technology Students (PSITS) organization for students. Orientation is one of the most important activities that the students must give. Knowing your university is the key to success since you will understand what are the university and college goal, mission and vision.

The first year student must be guided by the policies and standard of the university so that they will be able to achieve what the university want them after finishing their 2 and 4 years in college. The student must understand the holistic approach after their graduation.

I am assigned to discuss about the instruction with the following topic:

  • Computing concepts
  • Computing curriculum
  • Criteria for Selection of Honors
  • Academic achievements
  • Academic Activities

The computing concepts provides a clear distinction of the different disciplines in computing education and their existence. What are the different kinds of computing degree programs? How they are similar or differ and how can I tell what their names really mean?

How computing education changed?

Computing has become a family of discipline. Before 1990’s, the Electrical Engineering focuses on the Hardware side, Computer Science on the technology side and Information System on the business side. During the 1990’s, Computer Engineering has become a strong discipline, Software Engineering emerge become a strong area with the Computer Science and later formed its own entity and Information System programs become to emerge as well.

The growing diversity in computing due to the increased that occurred in the space between the hardware application and business. The root issue is that Computer Science use to be the game in town and society is demanding more and different things.

The students should also know the different career path of their courses including the similar subject of the program. It was a successful event with the presence of almost all the first year and transferees during the event.
