Rented a Kayak this Monday to paddle on the Carmans river in Yaphank / Shirley Long Island, NY.
So grab a paddle and ..... LETS GO.
Started out just south of Sunrise Highway where the river is dammed and heading south Through Wertheim National Wildlife Refuge. Minimum rental time was an hour and a half, but the nice guy running the place let me have 2 hours.
Map shows where I started and an "F" where I finished going down stream. But it was really only halfway because I had to paddle back up against the light current to get where I started. I needed the full 2 hours to make the trip.
This was my very first time in a Kayak. I have been in Canoes but never a Kayak. It was very stable once you were seated, just getting in and out was a little new to me.
Big and small turtles near the bank, some about a foot across.
After going under the second bridge where many Swallow birds had their nests the river opened up into a large shallow like lake.
Caught a couple of Swans trying to get some sleep till I came along.
Got down to the leaning Osprey nest where the "F" on the map is and where I dropped my Canon camera in the water. So no more pictures on this #paddlewithme.
After I got back, had lunch then shot over to Riverhead and bought a new camera. This one is water and shock proof. Then went to Dick's and bought a Pelican Kayak on sale for $179.
Lose some win some
#paddlewithme is a take off of .... @lyndsaybowes #walkwithme
Oh wow that looks fun and relaxing at the same time, well thank goodness you sweet talked the guy for that extra time, argh those green views of the bank are wonderful and those cute turtles! @manorvillemike
The guy was an English transplant. Heck of a nice guy. He still had his accent, kidded him about it. I said he should be talking like a New Yorker by now.
Such a nice kayaking trip. So glad you didn't tip me over in the river with the camera... ;-) Nice photos Mike. Have fun on your next trip
Thanks @sunscape it was fun.
I am so proud of you for getting in that kayak. : ) I love the Osprey and the reflections. It was an expensive day for you but a wonderful day at the same time.
Thank you, I don't know how much use it will get. Not fun when to hot in protected waters. Then there are the biting flies & mosquitoes. Got sunburn this first time after only 2 hrs . Must get a good day and location. But STEEM must be fed.
Beautiful natural scenery, if nature were in our area, surely we are proud of that nature.
Beautiful world out there.

How very awesome a Camera and a Kayak woohoo!!
Total new view and mode of transport keeps you
away from them ticks! Love the new TAG!! @manorvillemike!!
What great photos of the swans!!
That's the idea. Yesterday went down a local Manorville trail and came back with an assortment of the miserable critters. Thanks for stopping by @shasta
Beautiful place!
I read "the river is damned" at first glance 8-).
You can say it's a damn river at times, when it steals your camera.
That is a damnable thing to do indeed, and it makes photography a pricey hobby.
You'll hate me for saying this, but wrist straps are a great invention 8-P.
Taking out the batteries, rinsing with copious amounts of distilled water, and then letting it dry for a long time can sometimes recover a camera from such rivery misfortune.
Thanks for advice. Think it's to late to wash out.
Hey you are having a good time! I need a break too and the weather is getting hotter :) I was afraid of Swans when I was a kid. One of them tried to bite me lol
Yeah ... Swans will do that when protecting their nest.
Incredible scenery and impressive photos. Congratulations.
Thanks all in a mornings
Ah! Here was where your camera was damaged; but like `you say:" you lost something but you won something better "... I congratulate you for having the courage to keep you in a kayak ... I've never done it; I imagine that the sensation must be spectacular and the physical conditions must be very good to make those trips. I congratulate you @manorvillemike for the value and for the good physical conditions.
Wasn't bad. Should have done less the first time.
Nature Saves a lot of beauty, and becomes a benefit for us humans.
Good day to be alive.
