I've finally been paddling and it was HEAVEN! My SIL and I went to Fanshawe Conservation Area just outside of the city.
The day hadn't started very well. I woke up feeling sad. I've been mourning the loss of living on Lake Erie for six months every year. I needed to get out on the water. Going to my knitting workshop would be a good distraction. And it was.
As I was heading across the parking lot to go home, Becky, my SIL texted, "Want to go yakking?" Well...you know my answer. It took me 10 minutes to get home and about 5 minutes to grab my gear and GO! I keep all my gear in one place so I can "bug out" quickly if the opportunity arises. 30 minutes later I launched! GOD it felt good!
This is my old girl. She has far outlived my expectations. At 12 years old my trusty inflatable has been patched twice. She looks well loved! LOL
We paddled across the lake to a little in-let where we usually stop for a quick "smoke". London had massive flooding this spring which hadn't been quite so intense on this side of the damn. This small stream wasn't there last year. As we nosed in there we gave a young raccoon quite a fright when he realised we were watching him. Sorry, no pic of the little guy.
This is just a tree but I love this shot. LOL! For a point and shoot camera my little Nikon does pretty well.
And of course the pit stops were fun too! The kayak that Becky is in is the newest version of my old Girl! I love it but like many hard shell kayaks, the back of the seat isn't properly supported. It leans too far back for comfort.
We had "Scoobie Snacks"! It looks like we didn't paddle very much but we probably covered 3 to 4 km. A short paddle but the first excursion can leave you pretty sore if you aren't careful.
I've had a few people ask me how the heck can I take shots from a kayak... here's a video that shows my answer. If anyone has a better idea I'd love to hear it.
The London Rowing Club uses Fanshawe Lake for practices and events. Here's a pic of a single "skull". Several tandems flew by us. Those sleek vessels are fast!
Here is their interesting club house.
The Thames River has caused some disasters over the past centuries so the The Upper Thames River Conservation Authority decided to build this dam in 1950 and it was completed two years later.
As we were landing near the dock we heard a drum! When I turned around this is what I saw:
I just loved that sound! All in all it was a great day!! Sometimes the Universe hears your call. Thanks Universe....
Until next time friends.....
Haha, it took me half the post to figure out what was going on... I kept looking at the pictures and trying to find a yak....
I really like the one with the drum! I'd wanna be the one up there keeping time with it, but they would probably fire me from the position because I would be too creative with it. LOL! I am impressed with your videoing-while-kayaking skills! 😊
That drumming looks pretty fun! Thanks @thekittygirl
