I'm pretty sure I did it before I was good at cooking. I was a street kid and my cooking was pretty much whatever food I could get my hands on. So the recipes were, "However much fish you caught with however many potatoes you have and one of the salt packages you took from the diner." That kind of evolved over the decades into some pretty good cooking, if I do say so myself. When I was old enough to work I got my first jobs in restaurants, and eventually spent 20 years cooking professionally, so I can use recipes, I just don't have to.
