"No overcrowding there."
Washington, January 29 - The US president revealed today how some of his disparate foreign-policy moves and rhetoric form part of a broader strategy, with a remark that two vast northern expanses to which he has referred as potential US possessions could serve well as the destination for more than two million inhabitants of the war-torn Gaza Strip, White House correspondents reported.
Donald Trump answered a smattering of questions from reporters this morning as the presidential entourage returned to Washington. A journalist asked the president whether he believes Egypt and Jordan, whom he has been pressing to accept Palestinians who wish to flee Gaza, will agree to take in anything more than a symbolic number, if any at all.
Trump responded, "We'll see what they do. We give them a lot of money, a lot of aid. Maybe they can't take all the Gazans, but the place is a wreck now. Unlivable. Just a pile of rubble, according to news reports. So we can put them in Canada and Greenland, once we annex those countries."
Trump has floated American expansion at Canada's expense before, even referring to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau as the country's "governor," as if Canada were merely one of the United States. He has also talked up acquiring Greenland from Danish administration. Both rhetorical moves have raised eyebrows and hackles in those countries and elsewhere, though some leaders in Greenland, which has autonomous rule from Copenhagen, have warmed to the idea of closer ties to the US.
"Those are wide open places, countries with lots and lots of space - no overcrowding there," he explained. "People always talk about Gaza being 'the most densely-populated place on Earth' - well, it's not. Even Tel Aviv is more densely populated. There are Manhattan neighborhoods more densely populated. My rallies are more densely populated. Don't believe any of that garbage. Still, if dense population is a problem for them - they sure do seem to complain about it a lot - then they'll love it in Canada or Greenland. Outside the major cities, Canada is empty. Greenland doesn't even have cities. Igloos, maybe?"
"Maybe the Palestinians can know what it's like to come to a land that doesn't have a lot of people, and make it into something," he suggested. "I know we've talked about Indonesia recently, as well, but that's a real s***hole. They have enough Muslims already. It's the largest Muslim country in the world. It wouldn't be fair."
