Facebook/twitter is not an earning platform like steem. The major incentive to use the steem blockchain is to earn. Take that away and you just have a regular social platform that does not have the exposure, tools, and active members to create those said communities you spoke about. If I wasn't earning on steem there will be no need to use it. You might want to speak about censorship but the reality remains that a vast majority of the people on the cyberspace do not care about it.

SOLUTION

Solve the distribution problem. If we cannot do that then maybe we should change directions. Maybe move away from being a content discovery platform to a more business orientated blockchain.

It's not a case of greed like most people would want to think. Steem is a blockchain build on the core principle of rewarding people. Everyone comes here with that mindset. It's different when you're on Facebook or Twitter. And to be quite frank, it is easier to build things when people are not thinking about money first. But like I said we can easily solve this problem with a proper distribution of inflation. I'm happy with the new developments in terms of tokenizing the steem blockchain. If these tokens can increase in value and these various groups create a more sustainable model for their platform then maybe things can change for the better for steem. That's my two cents

About putting time and research in your work. We cannot see the level of quality we find on other platforms because there is little or no incentive for that. I can't spend 2-3 days researching and write a post when I know it will get less than $2. You might argue that people do the same on other platforms, that's because their work stands a chance of reaching thousands and millions of people, and hopefully, it will pay off in terms of monetary gains. If I received 20 genuine comments on a post regularly, I might even forgo the monetary aspect because to me, my work has an impact and I'm in some way I am influential. People would either settle for fame(influence) or fortune(money) or both. We are not providing either now. Maybe in the future. With the way things are going, I might even put in some of the money (when I have it) and build what I want to see. It's possible at this point. It is only a matter of time. It is not a totally hopeless situation.

Thanks for your very valuable insight. I like this:

" it is easier to build things when people are not thinking about money first."

I totally agree.

The thing is, we did kind of have the traffic and eyes back in those days (because of the money clearly). There were real life communities meeting up in places like Nigeria and travelling to Ghana and to connect with Steemians there. I used to watch the videos put up by the organisers. I can understand that those trips are now too expensive to put together now without the funding Steem provided when the price was at $5-6, but those communities were wholesale abandoned and left to rot immediately the price went down.

I happen to have had a glimpse of that during my early days on steem. There was a guy (and his steem) who used to host steem pageants and that's faux charity initiatives I saw past through. Monies were not put in the right places (still isn't if you ask me). We bought and sold the high. This bear wrong was an eye-opener.

There is nothing wrong with starting afresh. Instead of trying to recreate or relive the old days we can create something new--new communities.

What is really stopping us?

Honestly, I don't want to use price as an excuse. Take for example a community like clean planet/steem clean planet. I believe their goal is to provide a cleaner and healthier planet. What major campaign have they had? There are many organizations worldwide looking to invest in such initiatives, why are they not tapping into that? They could align with their members in countries where setting up a small campaign might be relatively cheap; get volunteers; creating online and offline buzz, etc. The scope is just myopic, no disrespect to the team, I don't know so much about their activities so my views might be wrong. But the fact that it's a crypto related initiative doesn't mean they should narrow their scope. There are so many projects like this that are failing or have failed not because of the price of steem but the lack of practical ideas. You don't need millions to impact your sphere positively.

I don't know so much about their activities so my views might be wrong.

Yes they are very wrong. @cleanplanet have huge plans, but they rather work in silence.

They have a Discord where you could go and tell them what you think.

Man! Steem is flawed. And I agree on different method of distribution, but the people who needs to change these things obviously don't want to see them these ways, these professional at the top feels differently and I don't like it as much as you do, but what do we do? That's what I think is plausible, how do we get them to understand this, since we're only a minor shareholders?

The masses vs the elite

Some point the masses began to accept the simple fact that their reality and that of the elites were miles apart. And they resolved to do things for themselves through sheer hard work, that's how the middle class was built.

I do not spend my time crying to the people at the top because it's either they do not care or they do not understand.

It will take time for me to build the things I want to see (with like-minded individuals). I'm not pitching my ideas some of which I share openly to the guys at the top because their goals clearly do not align with mine.

Unfortunately, there is little I can do. I'm in survival mode current. People trying to survive don't push innovation, they basically survive. Notwithstanding, the future is bright for steem. In about a year or two from now, I believe, I believe we will have sub-economies that will do well. So well that you might not even worry about how much steem you have. Just be alert and see beyond the steem coin.

I don't really feel i have anything because it's worthless without the right value in my opinion. So we're both thriving to survive I get all your ideas and I've shared them my only pain is that I wish we can be heard because I see a usual phenomenon. No matter how hard we may not like the the coming hard fork, we'd only ramble and then get use to it, because steem is built on representative democracy* hence the witnesses have the final say.
In future o hope we develop a round about way to get past this. So we can have a poll where everyone is counted.

The more we decentralize away from the center the better for us. You have the opportunity to become a pal dolphin or orca. Who knows what these side chains might become in the future.

Nothing here is guaranteed. I chose not to be blinded by negativity or optimism. One question I ask myself every time is:

If everything was to end today, how much will I gain or lose?

I have gained as much as I have invested. Steem has been good to me. And I try to maintain that balance. I'm not giving away too much for this imaginary future, neither am I taking too much. Balance.

I adore you man and you've spoken my heart really, the thing is let us face the fact some of these Communities that we used to see back in the days were mostly basically there because even if they claim to always give back the money they get on their post to charity most of the time they often lace their pockets with profit and because it seems it isn't really plausible anymore the obviously have disappeared and would be targeting for when there will be rise in the price of Steem. I know a guy in Nigeria here who was providing data for people to be on steem and people like donkeypong have him votes of More than 170$ just so he could continue rendering these services to people. But he's since stopped exactly when steem became 0.50$ last year.
A whole lot of greed and ghost really

Haha. Thanks bro.
Yeah I remember that guy :) . And another guy. And another one :)

All the Steem "ambassadors" are also now EOS ambassadors 🙄

Oh you remember him? 😂😂 It's crazy man, these guys hid under the cover of communities and became wealthy by claiming to be selfless really, I don't think they'll come here to defend themselves because they're busy looking for other places with milk and honey. I hope Steem moons I'll teach some of these guys some lessons

LOL. I'm sure you will :) haha.
The price will go up eventually and they'll all be back :)

Hmmm ... I think everyone is buying btc😀 Less movement is a normal thing. There are holidays, the price is steem low .. Ghost town🤔 I've hidden a little to the world of Splinterlands😉 Peace!

LOL. I still can't get a hang of Splinterlands/Steem Monsters or whatever :/

nor me. just not my cup of tea. i keep building stuff on drugwars though lol

It's still confusing me till today really

So true. I've had to leave many Discord communities because they died out. But on Fb they keep alive. Is it the money aspect? Is it because Discord is too heavy to use just for light-hearted fun?

We really need a messaging app.

Just now I tried to reach @organduo because GINA told me he muted me and I want to know why but I have no way or reaching @organduo on Discord thanks to privacy setting and since I'm muted it wouldn't help if I messaged the person on The Block either :')

We're screwed without a real community UI/UX.
But I have hope for SMT's plus Hivemind and all that's going to come to us.

Fingers crossed.

I'm sorry. My finger slipped and I muted the wrong person.

Ohhh... Didn't think about that, I see you post through Partiko which doesn't 'listen' to the muting rules probably :D Thanks for responding to me @organduo! <3

Yay! happy ending! :)
