I think it depends for me. Often I find remakes and especially sequels to be terrible. Sequels have a tendency to always try to go beyond what was done originally which usually results in over the top action scenes that are completely unrealistic. Or they try to add bigger and better characters and ideas that often do not fit in with the original story. Sequels that are based on books tend to be a little better because they do not have that over the top quality to them and everything seems to fit within the story universe.
On the other hand I do beleive that some remakes work. Sometimes the new cinema technology can make a real difference, especially in the cases of sci fi movies. Many remakes fail though because they try to appeal to the new generation by speeding things up and adding more action, color, and anger rather than focussing on good dialogue, character development and plot.
