Parkrun: more than just a 5k run

in #parkrun2 months ago

Parkrun is something so simple yet so inspiring, and for many life-changing. founded in 2004. The first event occurred in Bushy Park, London, on October 2, 2004. Since then Parkrun has grown and become a global movement involving millions of participants in numerous countries.

It was around September 2023 that I first heard about Parkrun not being a runner myself and always sleeping in on Saturday mornings, this was probably why I never heard of such a thing. With all that being said a couple of friends of mine told me about Parkrun and I was instantly intrigued. I could run and not worry about taking too long, I could participate in any event, and most of all it is completely free. After taking 2 weeks of training to build me up to 5k it was time, and on September 23rd 2023, I was ready for my first run. In short, I loved it and it inspires me to write today. Not only did it improve my health I began socialising so much more and learning more about myself. It gave me new confidence and motivation to aspire, achieve, and accomplish.

So what is Parkrun you ask and what is so special about a 5k run you ask? Well, Parkrun is a global community initiative offering free, weekly, timed 5-kilometre (3.1 miles) running events held in parks and public spaces. It is designed to encourage people of all abilities to participate and with that in mind, you don't even have to run you can walk. At some locations, you can even bring a dog.

Having been to 3 different Parkrun locations and being into the double digits of Parkruns participated, I have witnessed the greatness of communities. I have been to Parkrun locations with around 30 participants and others with 600 plus participants and they all have the same welcoming atmosphere. A welcome briefing before the start of each Parkrun, volunteers clapping and shouting encouragements as you pass, and normally a local cafe or a set area for volunteers and participants to grab refreshments and socialise post-Parkrun. Parkrun has a big community drive and over the years it has secured partnerships with some big brands and also charities.

Parkrun has transformed the way millions of people experience fitness and community, biggest of all it is of course completely free, which is why I and many are willing and do give back to Parkrun. It is not just about giving back financially, doing something as simple as Volunteering is what makes Parkrun happen, volunteers are the heartbeat of Parkrun. If you would like to show off some Parkrun stats or just have some Parkrun branded merch you can, simply buy Parkrun merch online It is high quality, affordable and most of all it's giving back to Parkrun.

Nice write up! I met @consciouscat at parkrun, we !LUV it. I have now done 479 parkruns @135 locations in 5 different country's with 47 volunteers. We have not made it to the U.k for one yet but hope.

One of these days we'll get over to the UK and do a parkrun over there. Though it may not be Bushy; I'm not used to parkruns with 1000's of people! !LOL
