恭喜发财! Happy Piggy New Year! Wishing everyone the best of health and a prosperous new year ahead!
Reunion dinner this year is a simple affair and mom decided to try her hand at preparing "poon choi" instead of the usual variety of 6-8 different dishes. Actually, preparing the "poon choi" is not that simple after all, as there is still a variety of ingredients that needs to be cooked separately to make up the dish. The curious me decided to ask Mr Google for the history of this dish.
Legend has it that during the late Song Dynasty, when Mongol troops were invading China, the emperor fled to the areas around Guangdong province and Hong Kong. When the royal family and their army passed through the New Territories, the locals wanted to host them but their resources were limited. Thus, they gathered all the best ingredients they had available, cooked them, and because there were not enough containers, they put the food inside large wooden washbasins – giving birth to the celebrated dish.
Well, to me it may look simple having all the dishes put together in one pot, but definitely the same amount of cooking as if preparing 6-8 different dishes. Less dish to wash is a plus....hahaha 😅
