Permaculture, Homesteading, and Community Building // A Field Trip to the UC Santa Cruz Farm & Garden

Hi everyone! I drove down to Santa Cruz with my housemate to check out the UC Santa Cruz farm and garden. He used to be the student manager of the UC Santa Cruz farm and toured me around the beautiful grounds. We drove down Highway One, getting oceanside views the whole way down. My housemate showed me around the Chadwick Garden and the UCSC farm, hoping that I'd be inspired by what they've been able to create in a climate similar to where I live. I was definitely inspired and stoked about creating similar projects back home. Here are some photos from our journey ::

A viewpoint from our drive down highway one.

The Chadwick Garden cottage, where lots of great learning happens.

Dried flowers hanging in the cottage.

The garden rules :: be kind, respect eachother's bodies and minds.

Chadwick Garden 1967, utter disregard for the impossible.

Rows of veggies on the UCSC farm.

UCSC has an amazing agricultural apprenticeship program. The buildings in the picture are the housing units for the apprentices.

They have an herb wheel, show casing different herbs and their medicinal properties and growing requirements.

There is a Life Lab section of the farm, specifically made for kids to come and learn about gardening and natural ecosystems.

There is a large human sundial in the Life Lab.

Ryan is climbing up an avocado tree in this photo. He dropped down about 30 avocados for me to catch and later make into guacamole.

We closed out the day by collecting persimmons off of this abundant tree. We went home with a car full of persimmons, figs, avocados, kale, chard, arugula, and more!

Fantastic the fact that young people are educated about gardening and the natural ecosystem. In this increasingly gloomy and gray society, there is no better thing in teaching respect and love for the earth and nature :).

Oh my god thats my kind of dreamhouse... A wife to children, a painting atelier, a garden, a bibliothek and lots of nature :-)

its wonderful

Looks like a lovely trip! Highway one has some amazing coastal scenes and he has a great handstand ;) Sounds like you guys had a good haul!

Thanks for the look around! Lots of inspiring stuff going on there. I especially loved the garden rules and of course drying Herbs. Always jealous of cali's seasons (tho not it's fires!~prayers for everyone affected- it didn't reach Santa Cruz, right?).

I also really enjoyed visiting the farm and alan chadwick garden last spring! I was amazed by how organized everything was, and with a nice sense of aesthetics to boot :)

interesting photographs thanks for sharing them :)

It's nice seeing a big persimmon tree like that one! I've got a smaller one and just harvested them all, with our colder weather in Oregon -- and raccoons visiting a little too much. It's great to see so much growing, too. The winter is so under-appreciated for some crops, like the leafy greens!

I have enjoyed reading your post it was very informative and what a great photo you have my vote by @mannyfig1956

which reminds me .... i have an avocado waiting for me. now's the perfect time for guac-lunch =D

The Chadwick Garden cottage is amazing! I would love to visit something similar if there were one near me

What an opportunity! If I knew of that when I was college age, I would have been there in a heart beat. Such a blessing getting that knowledge so early in life.

normal life caption ;) great work
