RE: Hugelkulture bed examination.

in #permaculture7 years ago

I stumbled on Hugelkulture by accident. Origionaly my primary objective was only to add mass to my raised bed garden (that way I would not need to add so much soil) The problem that I encountered with Hugelkulture is that the tree branches turn into soil (which is good) but when that happens I needed to dig up the beds to amend the soil. Can you tell me what a person can do if a person planted a bush in a Hugelkulture bed, and then the soil level and the bush sunk 4 inches?

Sort:

Depends on the bush. Hazelnut, blueberry, blackberry, and many other is does not matter. You can just add soil to the those and the part that you bury will just root. Its called stool layering. Other plants its no no. If you are talking about a complete re hugel, it would just be a replant. Thats not a big deal for hardy bushes, but I guess that depends on the size of the bush.

What about if the soil that a tree was planted in, what can I do if the tree sunk?

Depends on what kind of tree it is. If it cant be stoll layed, and you dont what to replant it you will be stuck with what it looks like now.

What is ' stoll layed' I am not familiar with that term but I enjoy learning about farming/gardening :D

The hazelnut bush in my video was once a bush planted in the ground with no box or bed around it. The raided bed was added lattwr and soil added latter. The parts that are burried in will root on parts that where at one time a branch.
