Heirloom Seeds or Hybrid Seeds?

in #permaculture7 years ago (edited)

I became more aware of the origins of the seeds when I started to grow my own vegetables and herbs. Year after year, I used to buy many varieties of seeds. I soon discovered that there is a big difference between natural - heirloom seeds and organic seeds. Organic seeds can also be called hybrid seeds because they were made through selection in laboratory and in selection fields. Hybrid seeds lose their genetic attributes. Over time they lose qualities from previous generations. Natural - Heirloom seeds, however, are made by nature, without influence from human hands. Natural seeds, called also Heirloom seeds, can grow by themselves because they are stronger genetically, they adapt better to environmental changes. Furthermore, they are stronger against disease and insect invasion.

I realized that every year, the human-made seeds, otherwise called organic or hybrid, increase prices on the markets and I'm asking myself how long can that continue for? Going back to natural-heirlooom seeds; I know when they grow in my garden. Every year they provide me with so many seeds that I collect them and can offer them at a very low price to my friends. It's the law of nature which allows us to do more with less, in a respectful way.

Growing hybrid seeds, I see that they always need to be fed special soil. This special soil also doesn't exist, as is, in the nature, it has to be man-made, by enriching it with minerals, nutrients needed by the seeds to grow in bigger quantity. In some ways, this is also not natural because the soil will then become poorer in nutrients and eventually damaged. Nowadays, we have so many problems with the traditional agricultural approach that weakens the soil.

Looking for a more natural way of using the soil to grow my food, I turned to Permaculture. Permaculture is creating a natural design for the gardens while respecting all the natural laws. The plants growing from the natural seeds will help keeping a healthy soil. This way of growing allows the seeds to not only take their nutrients from the soil, but also from other elements, like sunlight, rainwater and air. In Permaculture the soil is enriched naturally by being covered with biomass that grew previously in the area which then decompose.

Our choices affect our health, our finances, our environment as well as risking, in the long-term, the extinction of certain species. For me, the obvious choice is the natural seeds. That way I can ensure a responsible use of nature's goodness.

In the end, I find that hybrid seeds are like biologically disabled plants losing their good genetics attributes while natural seeds will continuously improve and adapt to their environment.

Studying nutrition, I learned that what we fuel our body with by eating is building our physical body and affects our health. It brings me a new awareness to wonder how will this food affect us if the hybrid seeds provide sterile plant that can't even create a future seed generation?

I believe this way means game over, which is why I turn again to the natural-heirloom seeds because I trust more the natural laws that's been here for a long time.
