فعل امر در عربی با استفاده از صیغه‌ی مضارع مخاطب (مفرد، مثنی، جمع) ساخته می‌شود.
طریقه‌ی ساخت فعل امر به این صورت است:
از ابتدای مضارع مخاطب، «ت» را حذف کنید و آخر فعل را مجزوم کنید (یعنی ضمه یا نون آخر آن را حذف کنید، مگر در جمع مؤنث که نون حذف نمی‌شود).
اگر بعد از حذف «ت»، حرف بعدی ساکن است، به ابتدای آن یک الف اضافه کنید که حرکت آن کسره است، مگر آنکه عین‌الفعل مضارع ضمه باشد، که در این صورت حرکت الف امر نیز ضمه خواهد بود.
دقت کنید که همزه‌ی امر همزه‌ی وصل است، مگر در باب إِفعال از ابواب ثلاثی مزید که همزه‌ی امر آن همزه‌ی قطع است.
