Wow! This is like a throw back to one of those classes during the school days.
From your analysis, some gas stations are not aware of this adulterated LPG, hence the explosion. I guess there should be a chemical test aside the physical one (odour) to ascertain the cooking gas.

Yes, there are chemical test .
These gadgets might not be available to average users , that was the reason I focused on the easiest mechanism “sense of smell” that is available to all.
