"Get a Life" My Opinions on the LIFE Chaos Legion Cards through the General Sale

in #pgm3 years ago

Peakd Hive Thumbnails.png

So General Sale is STARTED NOW and we're going to talk about Life, and finish out the first 24 hours of the sale with Death!

I don't know about you but I'm so excited to find out how many packs sell in the first 24 hours.

Time for you guys (and me) to GET A LIFE. Wait no, come back, I need people to read this! :o I don't want to have to go OUTSIDE.

As usual, we'll talk about my opinions, thus far, on playing with the CL Cards, how I feel about them in both a Modern and Wild context as well as some, small, opinions on the lore and art; It's time for Life, which happens to be one of my favorite Splinters, and ironically is my least favorite CL splinter!

Consider these tiny little analysis pieces on these CL cards and how I think they'll do in each meta.

"Get a Life!"

LEGENDARIES

SOUL FIEND | Chaos Legion | Legendary

He's SOOOUUUULLL FIEND Trumpets | Does not listen to Soul OR R&B | Kind of a Murder Machine

Soul Fiend is the opposite of Fungal Fiend: Fast, Squishy, and brings Swiftness to the party. This has decent synergy with Life's Chaos Legion cards, due to their lack of speed in their heavy attackers, when paired with the Slow of Time Mage, Life finally feels a little quick by buffing itself and debuffing its enemies.
  • If you want to improve Soul Fiend himself, you want to use either Kitty, Tyrus, Lorna, or Mother Khala, who grant additional Speed, Armor, Defense, or Health to Soul Fiend and make him a bit more dangerous and better at surviving, which is exactly what you want out of your 0 Mana.
  • You'll love him in Divine Shield, Armored, and Equalizer anywhere where you can increase the tankiness of this 0 Mana card, he's a great play. He's also solid as a throwaway in Opportunity
  • Soul Fiend, like the other Fiends, is a great generalist card with a decent ability at the end of its upgrades, but by being a 0 Mana, he's not specifically useful in any situation over another: If you have the space, you should put him in. Since he gets a speed boost, he should NOT be used in Reverse Speed

I love the design of this one, who is more 'runic' or glowy, when compared to Torrent Fiend, and out of the Fiends, Torrent and Soul are my favorites for their glowy, ethereal designs. This Fiend's got Soul too:

ADELADE BRIGHTWING | Chaos Legion | Legendary

Angel gets a massive revamp | Angel's Sister? | The most annoying card in Life.

I love her, I hate her, I want her on my team and I want her banned when she's on my opponent's team: Adelade is a monstrous magic attacker with a huge array of support abilities that make her an absolute nightmare.
  • Pair her with Chanseus. That's it, case closed, this is done, that's all the strategy you need. Okay I guess she's okay with Delwyn, Drake of Arnak, and Kitty as well
  • She's especially good in Armored, where she ignores Armor and can repair allies, she's good in Poison and Earthquake where she can res and maintain armor for the front tank, Equalizer, where she becomes a tank, and in No Melee, where she can absolutely thrash the opponent. She's a powerful powerful support, and that 1 Speed at level 1 makes her perfect for Reverse Speed as well.

I love her, she's very pretty and has a great color scheme, pairing light purple greys, yellows, and orange; what's not to like? She looks very similar to Angel, but with more refined artwork. We know how I feel about redheads and ginger hair, so I might be biased here. Finally, I love the way the wing cuzs through the composition and gives some dark framing to an otherwise bright card.

URIEL THE PURIFIER | Chaos Legion Air Drop | Legendary

The Angriest Angel | Hobbies: Professional Football Player | Spiteful Might of the Light

Uriel the Purifier is a kind of underwhelming airdrop: The meta does NOT favor him, with a multitude of new Affliction monsters, armor, protect, magic, and giant killer, he really is coming into Splinterlands at the worst time; A few expansions ago and this card would've been king. Now, maybe not.
  • Uriel works very nicely with Chanseus and Kitty anything that gives him more sustain on top of his ultra sustain.
  • This thing is a beast in Fog of War, Melee Attacks from Anywhere, Super Sneak, due to his Recharge ability, he might not be very good in Opportunity, but might actually be an (interesting) solid tank for No Abilities. It'll also be an absolute beast in Lost Magic
  • I don't really want this card myself, I don't hate it, but I think the meta heavily dumps on its perceived value, and if that meta changes, he could easily become an A tier card.

He's blocky, thick, and looks like a linebacker, hut hut HIKE.

EPICS

TEMPORAL MASTER | Chaos Legion | Epic

Things are about to get timey wimey | Needs 1.21 Gigawatts of energy | Not using Muscle Magic.

Our first non-muscle magic using card I think in Chaos Legion: Temporal Master is master of all things temporary, that, or he's master of being temporary. Oh wait no it's time, let me REWIND that. Temporal Master is master of all things timey wimey; wait no that sounds stupid, rewinding: Temporal Master, master of time. Too repetitive; you know what, we'll just move on:
  • Temporal Master is a squishy 3 mana card, but he's surprisingly useful with Delwyn in low mana Life Magic, where he can hit 6 Magic damage every other turn! For Life summoners, he pairs nicely with Tyrus, who gives him some much needed bulk, or Lorna for pretty much the same reason.
  • Being a 3 mana card, you have a lot of chances to use him, unfortunately, the free summoners: Khala and Sloan, are not very good choices for this card specifically, and so it will likely be a rare pick initially. Expect to see it frequently in Gold and Diamond though, due to its high damage for mana, and its Stun.
  • Bust this card out in Reverse Speed, No Melee, Armored, and Equalizer He's also a surprisingly powerful card in Little League, that is, IF he is able to survive long enough.

Temporal Master is, honestly, not as good as Time Mage, but I love the art here, the purpleish cloudy glow that encircles the magical circle is nice, and the specific cropping of the hourglass gives a striking art. He's got just enough juice to get the time magic going.

SPLSPSDivider.png

DAX PARAGON | Chaos Legion | Epic

Take a Gander at my Crystal Ball | Wears an Ascot? | Needs a White Cat in a Spinning Chair

This man is a VILLAIN. He's the epitome of Information is Power, and he has a LOT of power; He may not seem very strong statistically, but he uses that information to Amplify the plans and strategies of others, and serves as an Advisor to Silas himself, who chose him after meeting with him personally.

  • Dax Paragon has a ton of Synergy with Lorna Shine and Low Mana Life as a whole thanks to his ability Amplify
  • He's not very strong initially, only being useful as another low mana Life card for Delwyn at level 1, but you just level him up and see
  • This card belongs on nearly any low mana Life team: Pair him with Blinding Reflector, Pelacor Conjurer, Crystal Jaguar and watch teams crumble.
  • Dax himself is good in the Armored, Reverse Speed, and No Melee Rulesets, I do not recommend him at all in Poison/Earthquake, although you can get away with Earthquake by utilizing Brighton Bloom: You want Dax's Amplify up as long as possible.

The art here does a very good job of making this character look arrogant, at least a little knowledgeable, and rich: It then goes a layer further by making him a vast information network and one of the advisors to the Chaos Legion, a man who represents power from means other than pure magical or martial might: Dax Paragon is one of the most powerful allies of Silas: And not for his strength in battle. The only thing missing:

SPLSPSDivider.png

PRISMOLOGIST | Chaos Legion | Epic

Studied rocks and people laughed | Studied crystals and people laughed | Who's laughing now?

Prismologist is a Blast, she's one of the strongest Life Epic's in my humnble opinion, and her ability spread is absolutely perfect for High Mana life, where she brings an absolutely merciless amount of offensive power and debuffs to the table and hits Life counters where it hurts: With Blast, Forcefield, and Silence.
  • Prismologist is a solid pick for any Summoner, but is very clearly made for General Sloan, and by that token: Selenia Sky
  • Her blast is almost always a powerful presence on the field, but she goes down quickly to Magic, a common weakness in Life, though certain cards change this up; Later on, Prism's Silence helps.
  • Forcefield makes her a much more powerful late game, high mana tank than you are probably thinking: If it does more than 4, it does 1.
  • She has like 3 Weaknesses: Unprotected, No Abilities, and Blast. Put her in Snipe, Reverse Speed, Equalizer, Armored, Fog of War and she'll close up shop nicely, so long as nobody can snipe or get to her too quickly.

She looks like an anime protagonist, you know there's that tumblr post going around about the girl who's born with orange hair and they're like, Oh no, we've had an Anime Protagonist: this is her. She just wanted to get a Geology degree from her local community college but NOOOOO the world had other plans for her, now she's slinging rocks and magic at interdimensional Chaos Legion monsters.

RARES

PORTAL SPINNER| Chaos Legion | Rare

Why no Blue Portal | Orange Portal | Glados is MADos

A Portal 2 Crossover in the making. Portal Spinner is, well, both a really strong and solid card, and also, the bane of my existence because her damage/picks are PURELY determined by RNG: Those of you who know me know that my Bone Golem has hit like 3 monsters in the entirety of his playtime. My Stonesplitter Orc has retaliated like once, ever. And finally, in a speed matchup where cards are exactly the same: My card ALWAYS attacks in the order that causes a loss: That's right, if you mirror match me, except 1 card, and it comes down to say, Forgotten One vs Forgotten One, mine will ALWAYS lose.
  • Portal Spinner is basically letting Jesus take the wheel on your damage. Are you lucky or not? Go for it. Pair her with Sloan or Sky. Can you imagine this thing with Yodin? Oof.
  • She won't be hugely meta-relevant because of how RNG focused she is: Many of us just aren't lucky, others, are lucky, but don't feel like rolling the die when they can get a much less risky play.
  • Like many of the new ranged attackers in Life, her low speed makes her good for Reverse Speed, and since she's horribly squishy, Armored and Equalizer help out a lot. I don't recommend her in Snipe or Opportunity, as Scattershot overpowers these rulesets.

No complaints on the art except this: WHY YOU NO PORTAL 2?!

untitled.gif

SPLSPSDivider.png

CELESTIAL HARPY | Chaos Legion | Rare

The best Harpy | Sorry not sorry | Starring in the new movie: Harpies in Space

This might be one of my favorite life cards; at 2 Mana, she is such a solid card, and when paired with other Life Inspire monsters, this card will be an absolute monster. She is like the original Harpy, but starts with BOTH Flying and Opportunity, and still has similar stats despite being a Rare.
  • She doesn't pair necessarily great with any Life Summoner offensively, but defensively, she plays very nicely with Tyrus and Lorna
  • She gains True Strike later, making her a great Kitty Counter.
  • With Flying and Opportunity, she's a powerful pick for Earthquake, Low Mana, Fog of War and she can be a very solid pick in Lost Magic or Broken Arrows

I love the art on this card, it's absolutely beautiful, just from an appreciative aspect of it, those color combinations, the faint shading and soft tones, I'm really drawn to the card, and it helps that this is definitely one of my top picks for Life, alongisde many of the other Rares and Commons.

untitled.gif

SPLSPSDivider.png

PELACOR ARBALEST | Chaos Legion | Rare

He's Dual Wielding | DUAL WIELDING | This isn't a time for JOKES | Put him in Taken 4 or whatever

Pelacor Arbalest is pretty cool. Look though; I'm going to say it, he's definitely just a little overhyped: He's very powerful, but horribly easy to counter and make him eat it round 1.

  • Pair him with Sloan or Selenia Sky if you wanna go for shooting harpoons at people; go for Lorna or Tyrus if you want him to not die from literally a sneeze.
  • Pelacor Arbalest needs some protection, either with Shieldbearer and Taunt, or Truthspeaker and Protect: Seriously, don't just play him with no defense.
  • I like using him in Earthquake once he gets Flying, he's also solid in Reverse Speed, Close Range, Equalizer, Fog of War. I do NOT recommend using this guy in Poison or No Abilities unless your goal is to just waste 6 mana on turn 1.

Pelacor Arbalest is a dual wielding crossbow Van Helsing, and if he DOESN'T get a Van Helsing themed skin at some point I will flip a table: that's all I have to say.

untitled.gif

SPLSPSDivider.png

TIME MAGE | Chaos Legion | Rare

I gotta get this joke right | It's all about the timing | Thanks I'm here every Saturday night

This card has only a little bit of synergy with the rest of the Life meta, and with many of the starter summoners: Still, she is THE rare card that I like most. She doesn't look it stat wise, but she is an absolute must for almost any situation.
  • Pairs best with Kitty or Lorna Shine, but her Slow, and eventually, her Rust, are amazing support abilities on a fast magic attacker, something that Life lacks
  • Slow is massively useful for Life, as many of the new ranged attackers are god awful slow.
  • Use her in No Melee, Little League, Equalizer, Armored, and Fog of War to great effect. Avoid Snipe, No Abilities, Reverse Speed, and Weak Magic

She's really great art, I love the like, curly bob/pixie cut going on (look I don't know what that style is called, sue me) and the galaxy magical energy flowing behind her looks like it flows off of her hair, in fact, at first, I thought it WAS her hair. I also really dig the ruffled, somewhat Gothic Lolita dress that she's got going on, complete with a cape, she kind of gives off Sailor Moon vibes.

SPLSPSDivider.png

GENERAL SLOAN | Chaos Legion | Rare Summoner

She's ALSO ALSO a bully | She's a HIPPO | She's psychotic? | I like her!

I like General Sloan; It's actually one of my favorite Summoners concept wise, who DOESN'T want to be a Hippo WAR GENERAL?! But unfortunately for her, she's one of the most underwhelming Summoners currently, which is odd given the absolute dominance that is Prince Rennyn, Selenia Sky, etc.
  • General Sloan's Ranged buff makes her, of course, good with Ranged Cards, but she needs a card like Truthspeaker and an anchor like Chaos Knight, Hero of Beyond to really shine, OR she needs a strong frontline in Shieldbearer with Crystalsmith supporting to let her ranged monsters put on the hurt.
  • Range is a weird damage type: It has some of the strongest attackers in the game, but it is a horribly weak attacking time with none of the benefits or abilities of other attack types. Magic is faster and can attack in range or melee and ignores armor, Melee has a plethora of abilities that let it function in different lineups and often comes with Trample and Piercing, Ranged, well, gets Close Range and a FEW ranged monsters have Piercing. No Trample, not a lot of Rust. etc. etc.
  • Don't use General Sloan in Broken Arrows, but DO use her in Reverse Speed, Snipe, and Close Ranged where she will absolutely thrash. She's also great in Blast but cannot stand up to magic, so she needs Lost Magic or Weak Magic to be dominant here.

The best art, the BEST art. This isn't a debate, it has the glow, the subtle shading, intricate detail, an absolutely novel and unique character design, this is one of the best summoners concept wise since Kitty. She's held back only by her +1 Range ability being a much weaker stat boost than +1 Magic: The fact that Obsidian is +1 Magic for 4 Mana means General Sloan really deserved a +1 Health or -1 Speed bonus tacked onto her kit: Ranged is NOT as good as Magic, unless of course you have Blast.

COMMONS

SUNKAI HARVESTER | Chaos Legion | Common

Emperor's Groove Solider Lookin' Ass | Your battleship is SUNK | Look at that SHAVE

Okay, let's start off with my least favorite of the new Life Commons: He's basically Silvershield Warrior, but he was given Oppress to make him a bit more relevant, and has like, no CP. Not a great card: But he DOES have his uses, and gives a cheap replacement to a card that is now very expensive for what it does. - Like SS Warrior, he pairs well with **Tyrus or Lorna Shine**, and is a decent Reach Attacker that, once he gets Oppress, might actually be a better pick than SS Warrior. - Its stats are solid for a Position 2 Tank at 4 Mana, it's just a very boring card when you could slot in, say, Time Mage instead. - This card is solid in low mana **Melee Only and Little League**, and honestly, that's about it. Sorry Sunkai, we'll see what your other clan members bring to the table later on.

Art wise, he's fine, in fact, he's a pretty solid card with a really nice perspective, and the background just works with his color palette. I also really love his lore; for a soldier who harvests the souls of others to become more powerful, you would think he would have some sort of power spike, or ramp up in power as he gets kills. Imagine a weaker stat version of this card, but with Bloodlust, I know, I know, it's a Gladiator only ability, but for the sake of his Lore, it would've been PERFECT for Sunkai.

untitled.gif

SPLSPSDivider.png

GARGOYA SCRAPPER | Chaos Legion | Common

Scrappy Doo | 2 HP Void | Not the Ant-Magic we Wanted, but the one we Deserve.

He has his uses, but honestly, another one I'm not too big on: He gets Void, he's the anti magic tank we want, but he has 2 health and horrible damage and speed, which means he will rarely, if ever, capitalize on his Void except in super low mana.
  • Gargoya Scrapper is best with Lorna Shine for extra defense and surviving one extra attack.
  • Use him in low mana battles, he is a really solid card, its just that a new Void tank would've been absolutely loved to replace Clay Golem.
  • Throw him in Little League, Broken Arrows and really anything Low Mana, he's also quite good in Reverse Speed, also bonus points: Get a GF, 1 Mana GFs are incredibly useful

Finally, a muscular monster that's NOT magic damage, but he's ready to scrap:

untitled.gif

SPLSPSDivider.png

BLINDING REFLECTOR | Chaos Legion | Common

The ACTUAL Anti-Magick we Deserve | Greatest Name Inspiration of All Time | GLOWING Reviews

Blinding Reflector is awesome, he's a bunch of health and armor for 3 Mana, and gets Blind and MAgic Reflect as he levles, most importantly, he gets Magic Reflect at an actually reasonable level like Level 5... Blind: Not so much.
  • He's a great anti magick comp monster, and he WOULD pair well with Chanseus except he's specifically for low mana, and Chanseus doesn't play down there. Other good choices are Khala and Lorna to enhance his magic eating capabilities.
  • With the armor this card has, he's a good pairing with Scavo Hireling or Lone Boatman to cover his armor for melee attackers.
  • Play him in anti magic, once he gets magic reflect: Until then, he is a meat shield, essentially.
  • A decent card in Low Mana, Reverse Speed, Broken Arrows and No Abilities, he's best to run in anti magic though.

Shieldbearer's baby brother, Blinding Reflector is like the battallion that Shieldbearer would probably lead: A giant sarmy of shield warriors!

untitled.gif

SPLSPSDivider.png

CHAOS KNIGHT | Chaos Legion | Common

Step Aside Shieldbearer | The most Chaotic thing here: Her hairstyle

Life's new Commons are STRONG cards that really enhance Life's armor and tanking theme. Life unfortunately goes down REAL fast to Magic, and, until late Silver, that doesn't change much, but Chaos Knight and the other Tanks don't care, they're rocking ridiculous armor and Shield with a support like Truthspeaker

  • She pairs best with Tyrus and Lorna Shine where she gains more tankability; She's also a good pairing with Daria once she gets Giant Slayer.
  • I believe this card will overtake Shieldbearer in Mid-Mana, at least, pre-Shield, because of her lower mana cost and acces to Shield and Giant Slayer, which will make her a very offensive off-tank.
  • Pair with Scavo Hireling or Lone Boatman and Truthspeaker for a real rough time in Lost Magic
  • Great in Earthquake, Lost Magic, Weak Magic, Reverse Speed, Equalizer, and Melee Only, she has a very powerful presence in the lower league meta for sure, and can make Life the go-to splinter for when Magic is not allowed. Don't use her in Poison, Unprotected, or Snipe where she is either ignored, or much less of a threat.

Chaos Knight is a great card, the black and gold is ALWAYS a strong color scheme, and she manages to look very powerful, I know one thing: I don't want to fight her, but Chaos Knight be like:

untitled.gif

SPLSPSDivider.png

STITCH LEECH | Chaos Legion | Common

Snitches get Stitches| Facehugger Supreme | Soul Stealer | Nightmare Fuel

My favorite Life Common: Stitch Leech is an absolutely fantastic card, with his 2 Melee for 3 Mana even at level 1, he is a Sneak attacker from my dreams. Sorry Feral Spirit, you're still nice but LOOK at him.
  • Give him Armor with Tyrus and Drake of Arnak give him more health with Khala, make him take a hit with Lorna Shine, make him a tank with Peakrider, make him a speedy thing with Kitty, or make him outright lethal with Daria. Your choice, have fun.
  • He's 3 Mana, which means you will be able to fit him into nearly any team you need to, and he even works in mid mana battles where it's almost BETTER to choose him over a 5 or 6 mana card sometimes. Especially once he gets his Life Leech going.
  • Get a GOLD FOIL. Buy a ton of these, trust me.
  • Put him in No Heal, Equalizer, Unprotected, Lost Magic, Melee Only, Reverse Speed, but maybe avoid No Abilities, Fog of War, Super Sneak, and Poison/Earthquake

Art wise, Stitch Leech does an amazing job of bein absolutely horrific to look at, look at that... hairy.. spiny... slimy body? Look at those teeth, and that.. breath? I don't want this thing near me.

He uh... sucks. Get it?
