I was born and raised in the city of Davao. I spent the first 20 years of my life there before I left for Makati City to work. One of the things that I greatly miss about my hometown are the beautiful beaches that surround it. Located only two kilometers away from Davao City is an island called Samal, which has been a great part of my childhood. My family in Davao spent a lot of important occassions in the white sand beaches of Samal as I was growing up - birthdays, reunions, easter sundays, and there was even a time when we spent our christmas holiday there - but there is this part of Samal that I was only able to see very recently. You see, Samal Island is a city of two islands. There is a smaller island "hiding" behind Samal, called Talikud. The word Talikud is a Dabawenyo term meaning "behind".
Last April, my siblings and I decided to hold our reunion in a private resort in Talikud Island. I found the place through Airbnb and booked it for 3 days and 2 nights. It wasn't really our first choice but it was the only place big enough for all us (there were 21 of us including the kids). None of us have been to Talikud Island except for my mom so we took the route that the owner of the place suggested, which I guess is the best way to get there.
Mula sa amin, sumakay kami sa nirentahang dyip papuntang daungan sa Sta. Ana.
From our place, we rode in a rented jeepney going to the Sta. Ana Wharf. Our residence in Davao is not in the city proper so this took about 30 minutes. We hired two jeenpneys to accomodate all of us and our things. Jeep Rental: 300php for each
From Sta. Ana Wharf, we took a ferry to Talikud Port. Fare: 60php for each adult, 30php for children 12 years and below.
From Talikud port, we took a private vehicle they call "multicab" to get to the resort. This was a 20 minute ride. Each multicab can accomodate 10 persons so we got 2 for 600 php each.
We didn't expect much from the place since the photos in their gallery in Airbnb were not that impressive so we were very much delighted when we finally got there. The place had two houses. The main house was huge and the word C H I L L was writted all over the place.
The dining table was so long. It was enough to seat all of us.
The second floor was actually a room with 6 beds.
The second house was really more of a cottage for two rooms that could accomodate 8 more people. This is the view from its veranda.
There was a separate hut that served as the kitchen. Complete with a 2-burner stove, a fridge for the perishables, and kitchenware. Plates, mugs, glasses, utensils were also provided.
It was the perfect place to unwind and enjoy time with loved ones.
The kids enjoyed their time as well. Since we were on vacation, we pretty much let them do whatever they wanted.
Talikud Island has one catch though. The island does not have electricity, yet. This may be one of the reasons why I haven't been there before (another reason is you'll have passed by some 34 other resorts before getting to Talikud Island).
The resort is running on generator and they sort of let it rest between 4am and 12 noon. It didn't bother us much because there's just so much to love about being there with the people who matter to me the most but only get to see once a year.
