The environment is the surroundings in which we live. Some parts of it are living, such as plants, animals, and people, while other parts are nonliving, such as air and water. All these elements work together to keep life going.
People have always had an effect on the environment, but today human activities are causing serious damage. The air is being polluted with harmful gases from vehicles and factories.
Water is being polluted with pesticides, industrial waste, and domestic sewage.
Forest are cut down for timber and to make way for farmland, which causing many plants and animals to die out.
Air pollution can damage the earth's atmosphere and effect the climate. Chemicals called chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) are destroying he ozone layer, a protective barrier around the Earth that keeps out harmful radiation from the sun. Pollution from burning coal, oil, and car exhausts increases the greenhouse effect, a process which traps heat from the sun to warm the Earth. Many scientists believe that this pollution is already making the Earth warmer. Government are being urged to find ways of reducing pollution to prevent irreparable damage
