Filipino Best Street Foods @101

in #philippines7 years ago

We Filipinos have a very passionate relationship with food. While the Philippines is considered a developing country, Filipinos find ways to still enjoy food without costing an arm and a leg.

If you are planning to visit our country, the best way to understand the Filipino food culture is by looking to the streets.

Since Filipinos have a constant love affair with food, it is impossible to die of hunger in the Philippines. Street food vendors can be found practically everywhere – outside school, beside the church, at the street corners, inside jeepney or bus terminals, etc. They are popular to people from all walks of life – but especially to the one who has to keep a tight budget. Street food is extremely expensive. It’s a great experience to try out cheap and delicious Filipino food.

Balut

My family, friends and specifically Filipinos love to eat Balut. There’s no street food snack in the Philippines more famous (or possibly infamous) than balut — a partially developed duck egg embryo: you could call it the king of all Filipino street foods. It’s a snack that’s readily available, and very popular to eat, especially in the evening.
In order to eat balut, you crack a small hole at the top of the shell, and first drink out the chicken soup. You can then peel the rest of the egg, season with salt and vinegar, and eat the embryo and yolk.
Walking around a local market in the Philippines is a great place to try balut.

Lagalag/Binatog (Corn on the Cob)

In the Philippines one of the most simple and delicious Filipino street food snacks I enjoyed is binatog.
Binatog is a combination of corn, sliced off the cob, and oftentimes cooked plain, but with some fragrant lemongrass. When you order binatog, the vendor scoops it into a cup, tops on some fresh shred-ded coconut, and seasons it with salt. There are also some sweet versions where you’ll get this same combo with sugar or sweetened condensed milk, but I really en-joyed the salty one. Simple, starchy, and tasty!

Boiled Peanuts

Boiled peanuts are popular in some places where peanuts are common. This food is very popular in our school. Most of the students enjoy to eat this food aside it has nutrients that can keep active the cells of the brain ( of what people say) Actually, fully mature peanuts do not make good quality boiled peanuts; rather raw or ‘green’ ones are used. After boiling in salt water they take on a strong salty taste and become softer with the length of cooking, somewhat resembling a pea or bean, to which they are related. This are very sweet and enjoyable food to eat.

Kwek Kwek

After our class, Kwek Kwek is my friend's favorite food. The spicy sauce that makes it very delicious in taste. Everyday we spent 20-30 pesos and this is our kind of bonding.spending each other. This is very popular popular throughout Philippines. Kwek kwek are quail eggs that are coated in an or-ange colored batter, and deep fried. You’ll notice them by their bright orange color and almost ping pong ball appearance.
Again, you’ll need to season them with vinegar, chilies, and onions, before eating for the best taste. Kwek kwek is kind of like a corn-dog, but with a quail inside instead of a hot dog.

Letchon Baboy ( Roast Pig )

This my best favorite food, this is very popular in Cebu City which also called as the Letchon Capital of the Philippines. Because of its tastiness and crispiness Filipinos loved to eat Letchon Baboy (roast pig ) specially in most occasions such as Birthday's, Christmas, New Year and etc. Cebu prides itself in having perfected the art of roasting pigs which is very rare to find in other places.

Taho( soft silken tofu )

Every morning my sister and I will always eat taho (tofu). The tofu is usually sweetened with a sugary syrup, and served in a cup to eat. This our routine every morning, it gives us refreshment and this food will be our breakfast. You can eat F taho with a spoon, but the tofu is literally so soft, even though it looks like a solid, you can suck it up with a straw.
